At least 41 young men have died in South Africa following traditional initiation ceremonies held during the months of November and December 2023. Velenkosini Hlabisa, South Africa’s Minister of Traditional Affairs, addressed the situation on December 30, 2023, attributing the deaths to negligence both on the part of the initiation schools and the parents. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety standards and medical advice, stating that some young men are advised to avoid drinking water in an effort to heal faster.

Government Response to Rising Death Toll

Hlabisa highlighted that the summer initiation period, which coincides with the school holidays, has been particularly deadly, resulting in a record number of casualties. The minister expressed concern over the lack of oversight, noting that parents often fail to monitor their children’s well-being during the initiation process. “If you take your child to an initiation school, you never make a follow-up, you do not monitor, you do not go there to see whether the child does drink water, you are placing your child at risk,” he said.

The government has mandated that initiation schools must be registered with the authorities to ensure compliance with health standards. Despite this requirement, illegal initiation schools continue to operate, contributing to the rising death toll. Hlabisa reported that 41 individuals have been arrested in connection with these unregistered institutions, which often lure parents with the promise of acceptance for their children, sometimes based on falsified ages.
