A recent survey reveals that young consumers in the UK are spending over £6,500 annually on unconventional wellness and beauty treatments. Traditional advice has revolved around fundamental practices like cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and staying hydrated. However, the preferences of the social media generation have shifted significantly toward more extravagant options, including salmon sperm facials and mushroom powders.

According to a study conducted by Pukka Herbs, British women now allocate an average of £554 each month to various beauty and wellness products, while men follow closely with expenditures of £431. This data highlights a growing trend, despite 94% of respondents acknowledging the need to return to simpler health routines.

Among the 2,000 respondents surveyed, nearly half reported maintaining a regular self-care routine. A significant 37% use skin-boosting collagen supplements, and 31% take multi-vitamin pills or injections. Yet, the pressure to keep up with modern beauty trends has left over half (52%) of those under 40 feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, 25% admit to spending excessively on products aimed at enhancing their appearance.

The survey indicates that collagen supplements have become the most popular product among consumers, with 49% purchasing them in recent years. Other notable items include probiotic skincare at 36% and a variety of health supplements. Despite this spending, 23% of consumers report feeling deceived by wellness products that failed to deliver on their promises.

Interestingly, a majority of participants (68%) reflect on the health routines of their parents and grandparents, which often consisted of basic principles like healthy eating and regular exercise. In fact, 79% believe that maintaining health was much simpler 25 years ago. The survey revealed that older generations emphasized fundamental practices such as getting sufficient sleep (72%), drinking plenty of water (65%), and spending time outdoors (52%).

In response to these findings, Eleonora Zoani, Senior Herbal Blending Manager at Pukka, stated, “From expensive ‘miracle’ remedies to artificial products, we’re living in a time where our modern wellness routines have become a source of overwhelm. There was once a time when things were simpler, and the blueprint for feeling well in body and mind was more accessible. Reconnecting with nature and embracing herbal teas allows us to harness the benefits that herbs have to offer.”

As younger generations navigate this complex landscape of wellness and beauty products, 92% of those surveyed believe that spending time in nature is beneficial for both physical and mental health. Nearly half (47%) strive to spend at least an hour outdoors each day, highlighting a desire to return to more natural, less commercialized health practices.

The survey also identified the top products young consumers are investing in, which include:

1. Collagen supplements
2. Probiotic skincare
3. Hyaluronic acid skin-boosting serums
4. Gut health supplements
5. Ice rolling/Cryo sticks
6. Vitamin supplements
7. Hair regrowth products
8. Muscle-building BCAAs/creatine/protein powders
9. Sleep supplements
10. Chemical peels
11. Weight loss injections (such as Ozempic and Mounjaro)
12. Injectable fillers/Botox
13. Profhilo
14. Mushroom extracts (Reishi, Chaga, Lion’s Mane)
15. Salmon sperm (PDRN) facials

This survey underscores a significant cultural shift in how beauty and wellness are approached, particularly among younger demographics. As they navigate a landscape filled with both innovative and traditional practices, the desire for simplicity and effectiveness remains a common theme.
