Reports of wild boars have surged in the Petersfield area, particularly around Stoner Hill Road, prompting warnings from local authorities. Over the weekend, motorists faced disruptions as multiple sightings of at least two boars were documented rummaging and fighting on the roadway.

Drivers have been cautioned to exercise care while navigating Stoner Hill Road, where the East Hampshire Police noted the presence of these creatures. A police spokesperson stated, “We are aware that a wild boar has been sighted on Stoner Hill Road, Petersfield. If you are driving around this area, please be mindful of this and drive carefully and at an appropriate speed.”

Social media platforms have seen an influx of images and video clips capturing the boars in what is locally referred to as the “Little Switzerland” stretch of the road. The first sightings were reported at the end of last week, marking a notable increase in wild boar activity in the region.

Recent Sightings Expand Wild Boar’s Range

Further sightings continued this morning, including a particularly notable report of a “huge black wild boar with serious tusks” filmed wandering through farmland between East Meon and Ramsdean. This incident occurred approximately two miles from Stoner Hill Road, suggesting a possibly larger population residing in the wooded slopes of The Hangers.

The increase in boar sightings has led to significant traffic congestion on Stoner Hill Road, as reported by local drivers. The police are urging the public to remain vigilant, especially in areas known for wildlife activity.

Although wild boar sightings are not uncommon in certain regions such as The New Forest and Forest of Dean, they are relatively rare in the Petersfield area. Nonetheless, isolated reports from recent years indicate potential increases in their numbers, with previous sightings documented in woodlands around Adhurst, Steep, Liss, and Hillbrow.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and encourage residents to report any further boar sightings. The presence of these animals highlights the need for awareness and caution among drivers in the vicinity of these woodlands.
