Venus Williams Launches 2026 Season with Exciting Doubles Matchup
Venus Williams is poised to kick off her 2026 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, where she will compete in both singles and doubles. After receiving a wild card entry, Williams has also secured a spot in the upcoming 2026 Australian Open, marking her return to Grand Slam tennis after a year of limited appearances. Her first challenge will come in the doubles arena, where she is set to partner with Elina Svitolina against the duo of Alexandra Eala and Iva Jovic in the opening round.
This marks a significant moment for both players, as it is the first time Williams and Svitolina have teamed up for doubles. Svitolina, a former world number three, has an impressive record with three Grand Slam semi-final appearances between 2019 and 2023. Although she participated in only one tournament since the 2025 US Open, she is eager to return to form at the ASB Classic.
Exciting Matchups Ahead
The matchup promises to be a fascinating clash of generations. Williams, at 43 years of age, faces off against Eala and Jovic, who are both emerging talents in the sport. Eala made headlines last season by reaching her first WTA final in Eastbourne and breaking into the top 50, while Jovic captured her first title in Guadalajara. The combined age of Eala and Jovic is just 38—seven years younger than Williams alone.
As the draw for the ASB Classic is now complete, the players are aware of their upcoming challenges. Svitolina enters the tournament as the top seed and will commence her campaign against world number 75 Varvara Gracheva. Williams, meanwhile, faces a tough opponent in former Australian Open semi-finalist Magda Linette. Eala’s opening match is also demanding, as she will take on former top-20 player Donna Vekic. Jovic, seeded third, will start her run against a qualifier yet to be announced.
The ASB Classic not only serves as a warm-up for the Australian Open but also highlights the evolving landscape of women’s tennis, where seasoned professionals like Williams continue to compete alongside rising stars. With a mix of experience and youthful energy, the tournament promises thrilling matches and compelling stories, setting the stage for an exciting 2026 season.
