Jo Austin, a cherished veterinary practice manager at Eastgate Vets, passed away on February 20, 2024, at West Suffolk Hospital after a brief illness. The 61-year-old had dedicated an impressive 45 years to the practice, based primarily at its Bury St Edmunds branch, while also supporting locations in Mildenhall and Thetford. Her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and clients alike.

A Lifelong Commitment to Veterinary Care

Jo Austin’s journey in veterinary care began at the young age of 16, when she joined Eastgate Vets as a ‘girl Friday’. Over the years, she undertook various roles, including animal care, reception, and laboratory assistance. Her hard work and dedication led to her promotion to head receptionist and eventually to practice manager more than 30 years ago.

Throughout her career, Jo earned a reputation for her warmth, empathy, and unwavering commitment to both clients and colleagues. Claire Crane, co-practice manager at Eastgate Vets and a close colleague of Jo for 42 years, shared, “Jo was an amazing colleague with a heart of gold, and we will all miss her terribly.” She highlighted Jo’s ability to connect with pet owners in the community, noting the numerous messages of condolence received following her death.

A Life of Dedication and Passion

Outside of her professional life, Jo was a devoted family woman. She was married to her husband, Jim, for 35 years and was a loving mother to her daughters, Becky and Kirsty. Jo’s passions extended beyond her work; she had a love for gardening and often shared her enthusiasm with her colleagues by gifting them plants.

“Working in a vet practice, Jo loved animals, especially cats, and she adopted many strays that came into the practice looking for a home,” Crane remarked. Jo’s kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on everyone around her, and she was remembered for her ability to uplift spirits during difficult times.

Katie Robinson, a regional Business Development Director from VetPartners—the parent company of Eastgate Vets—expressed deep sadness over Jo’s passing. “Jo put the needs of every team member above her own and has helped countless vets and nurses achieve their dreams in a very testing profession,” Robinson stated. “We are so honoured to have worked alongside such a humble, kind, caring, and dedicated colleague.”

Jo Austin’s funeral will take place at St Edmund’s Chapel at West Suffolk Crematorium in Risby at 12:00 on March 20, 2024. In her memory, donations can be made to Bury’s Stray Cat Fund, reflecting her lifelong passion for animal welfare.
