Sydney Sweeney’s Hairstylist Responds to Backlash Over New Look
Sydney Sweeney’s hairstylist, Glen Oropeza, has come to the actress’s defense following criticism of her recent hairstyle, described by some as a “MAGA bob.” This backlash arose after Sweeney appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on December 1, 2023, showcasing a straight, shoulder-length blonde bob that many viewers likened to the hairstyles associated with conservative women. Comments on social media suggested that her look evoked “Stepford wife” energy and compared it to a style favored by women in the conservative movement.
The 28-year-old actress, known for her role as lesbian boxer Christy Martin in the film “Christy,” has found herself at the center of controversy not only for her hairstyle but also for a recent advertisement she did for American Eagle. In the ad, which aired on July 23, 2025, Sweeney stated, “My jeans are blue,” a phrase that some interpreted as a double entendre promoting eugenics and white supremacy. This led to significant backlash, prompting discussions about the implications of her words and image.
Despite the uproar, Sweeney has opted not to address her critics directly. However, she does have supporters, including Donald Trump and the White House, who have defended her amidst the controversy. Adding to the speculation, it was revealed that Sweeney has been registered with the Republican Party since 2024, further intensifying debates over her public image and the messages she may be sending.
Fashion Critiques and Social Media Reactions
The critiques of Sweeney’s appearance intensified when fashion critic Blakely Thornton weighed in, characterizing her hairstyle as “the stiffest wig” and likening her to a character from “The Hunger Games.” In an Instagram reel, Thornton expressed frustration, suggesting that Sweeney and her team were intentionally leaning into a controversial aesthetic. “I don’t want to keep talking about this white girl,” Thornton remarked, indicating that the styling choices were deliberate.
In response to the backlash, Oropeza took to social media, reportedly stating, “Wasn’t a wig but you can’t get my girl’s name out of your mouth.” His comments seemed aimed at Thornton, suggesting that the criticism was excessive and attention-seeking. Oropeza further defended Sweeney by questioning why someone would care so deeply about a hairstyle that did not affect them personally, calling out the need for respect and decorum in public discourse.
The exchange between Oropeza and Thornton highlights the contentious nature of celebrity culture, where public figures often find themselves subject to scrutiny over their appearance and choices. As the conversation continues to unfold, it raises questions about the intersection of celebrity, politics, and societal expectations.
While the debate surrounding Sweeney’s hairstyle and the advertisement is unlikely to fade soon, it illustrates the complexities faced by public figures in managing their image in a highly polarized environment. As Sweeney continues her career, it remains to be seen how these events will shape public perception moving forward.
