Surrey County Council Champions Recycling with Road Bollard Initiative
Surrey County Council has successfully recycled approximately 240 road bollards, preventing up to 5–6 pallets of materials from ending up in landfill. This initiative reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to reducing waste and optimizing resource use in an effort to promote a greener future.
The recycled bollards are being processed for reuse, which significantly reduces the need for new raw materials. This innovative approach not only gives old equipment a new purpose but also aligns with broader sustainability goals. In partnership with Ecologi, the council has committed to planting one tree for each bollard recycled, resulting in 240 new trees being planted globally. These trees are expected to absorb around one third of a ton of CO2 equivalent over their lifetimes, contributing positively to both environmental restoration and community support.
Impact on Sustainability Goals
This initiative serves as a practical example of how incremental actions can lead to substantial environmental change. By rethinking waste management practices, Surrey County Council is not only minimizing local environmental impact but also playing a role in achieving international climate objectives.
The council’s efforts are part of a larger strategy to become a net-zero authority by 2030. To reach this ambitious target, the council is focused on reducing emissions across its buildings, services, and supply chains. Projects like the bollard recycling initiative illustrate how immediate actions can facilitate a sustainable future.
Residents and stakeholders can learn more about Surrey County Council’s journey towards net-zero by visiting their dedicated climate change webpage. This platform provides insights into their ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at reducing carbon footprints across the region.
As the council continues to implement sustainable practices, the recycling of road bollards stands out as a noteworthy example of how local governments can contribute to global environmental efforts while fostering community engagement.
