Roy Keane Opposes Carrick’s Permanent Role at Manchester United
Roy Keane has made it clear that he does not support the idea of Michael Carrick becoming the permanent manager of Manchester United, despite the team’s recent 3-1 victory over Aston Villa. The win on March 15, 2026, marked Carrick’s seventh success in nine matches since taking over in January, boosting United’s chances for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
During the post-match analysis on Sky Sports, Keane stated, “I think there are better options out there.” He expressed skepticism about Carrick’s suitability for the long-term role, noting that while Carrick has done well in recent matches, the conditions have favored him. “They’ve had three weeks to prepare for the matches. It’s been good timing for him,” Keane added.
Keane Highlights Management Challenges
Despite acknowledging Carrick’s achievements, Keane pointed out that managing Manchester United entails far more than winning games. He emphasized the complexities involved in contract negotiations, pre-season planning, and recruitment, which Carrick has yet to face in his current caretaker role. “I think to manage Manchester United, you need someone a lot more experienced in terms of winning trophies, competing in Europe, and he hasn’t got that,” Keane remarked.
Keane’s views are in stark contrast to those of his former teammate, Wayne Rooney, who recently endorsed Carrick for the managerial position. Rooney praised Carrick’s calm demeanor and his ability to connect with the players, stating, “One hundred percent he should [get the job].” He believes Carrick has fostered a stronger team dynamic, which could lead to sustained success.
Potential Managerial Candidates
In response to inquiries about potential candidates for the managerial position, Keane mentioned notable names such as Diego Simeone and Luis Enrique, suggesting that United should aim for the best available talent. He acknowledged that if the club’s board encounters high demands—potentially in the range of £25-30 million per year—they must still strive to secure a suitable manager.
While Keane remains critical of Carrick’s long-term prospects, he noted that his current success has elevated Carrick’s profile within the club. “If Carrick had been mentioned three months ago to be the next Manchester United manager you’d have been locked up,” he said, highlighting the shift in perception that has occurred during Carrick’s tenure.
As for Carrick, he remains focused on the immediate challenges ahead. Following the victory over Aston Villa, he stated, “I’m in this position at the moment, doing the best I can, and I’m loving it.” Carrick acknowledged discussions with club executives but reiterated his commitment to the team’s current objectives, specifically the upcoming match against Bournemouth.
With eight matches remaining in the season, Manchester United currently sits third in the Premier League, three points ahead of Aston Villa and five clear of Liverpool. The club’s performance under Carrick has sparked discussions about the future direction of the team as they aim for Champions League qualification.
As the season progresses, the debate surrounding Carrick’s suitability for the permanent role will likely intensify, particularly as Keane and Rooney represent two divergent views on the matter. The outcome of this managerial decision could have lasting implications for Manchester United’s ambitions in both domestic and European competitions.
