Rasmus Hojlund Thrives at Napoli After Manchester United Struggles
Rasmus Hojlund is enjoying a resurgence at Napoli, demonstrating his potential after a challenging tenure at Manchester United. The 22-year-old forward, currently on loan from the English club, has made an impressive start in Serie A, scoring four goals in his first six matches. His performance has caught the attention of Denmark’s national team manager, Brian Riemer, who attributes Hojlund’s success at Napoli to being part of a “well-functioning team.”
Hojlund’s stint with Manchester United saw him score 26 goals in 95 appearances across all competitions. Despite his overall contributions, his time in the Premier League was marred by inconsistency, particularly last season when he managed only four goals in 32 league appearances. This lack of impact ultimately led to his summer transfer back to Italy, where he had previously played for Atalanta before joining Manchester United in 2023.
Under the guidance of Antonio Conte, Hojlund has flourished at Napoli, a club currently sitting atop Serie A. Riemer noted that the striker’s current form is a reflection of being surrounded by teammates who are dedicated to supporting one another. “The fact that he is now on a well-functioning team, with players around him who take pride in helping others, is crucial for a striker like Rasmus,” Riemer stated.
Despite the struggles he faced at Manchester United, Riemer is confident in Hojlund’s abilities. “I think Rasmus has the quality for both leagues, without discussion,” he said. He emphasized that Hojlund’s adjustment to Italian football should not overshadow his potential to succeed in the English game.
Hojlund himself has acknowledged the importance of being part of a successful side. “Not much has happened other than me getting into a good football team,” he remarked, highlighting the positive changes since his return to Italy. He emphasized his readiness for the season, stating, “I’ve played a lot and it’s been going really well. I’ve felt fit and sharp.”
As Hojlund continues to shine in Serie A, he also prepares for upcoming challenges with the Danish national team. Denmark will face Belarus on October 12, 2023, before hosting Greece on October 15, 2023, in what promises to be a competitive qualification campaign for the World Cup. Riemer hopes that Hojlund’s positive momentum will carry over into these crucial matches.
Conte praised Hojlund’s progress after he scored in Napoli’s recent 2-1 victory over Genoa, noting, “He has significant room for improvement, and he needs to work because he has the potential to become a star, and he’s proving it.” As Hojlund continues to adapt and excel in his new environment, both his club and national team will be eager to see how far his talent can take him.
