Police Make 70 Arrests to Combat Knife Crime in February
Police in the West Midlands executed a significant operation in February 2026, resulting in the arrest of 70 individuals connected to knife crime and violent offenses across several key locations, including Dudley, Wolverhampton, and Walsall. This initiative, part of the Guardian Taskforce, aimed to reduce incidents of youth violence and enhance community safety through proactive policing measures.
During the month, officers conducted extensive patrols across the region, which also included Sandwell and the Birmingham area. As part of their efforts, police carried out 367 stop searches, leading to the confiscation of 60 weapons, predominantly knives. The operation demonstrated a focused commitment to tackling the rising concerns surrounding knife-related incidents.
In total, the arrests were categorized by location, with 39 arrests made in the Black Country, 28 arrests in Birmingham, and 17 arrests in Coventry and Solihull. The significant number of arrests underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing violent crime.
Insp Colin Gallier, who oversees the Guardian Taskforce, emphasized the importance of the operation in safeguarding the community. He stated, “Our teams are continuing to work incredibly hard to take knives and offensive weapons off the streets. Every knife seized is potentially a life saved. These knives are the reason why we need to continue to carry out stop and searches.”
The initiative not only focuses on enforcement but also aims to educate young people about the dangers of carrying weapons. Officers from the taskforce have been actively engaging with schools, providing support and resources to deter youth from violent behavior. This outreach is part of Project Guardian, which emphasizes collaboration with the Violence Reduction Partnership to help divert young people away from crime.
The operation reflects a comprehensive approach to tackling knife crime, which includes plain-clothed operations and high-visibility patrols. The ongoing commitment from local policing teams is crucial in fostering safer environments for communities across the West Midlands.
As the Guardian Taskforce continues its work, authorities remain vigilant in their mission to reduce knife-related incidents and engage with the youth in meaningful ways. The police’s proactive stance aims to create a significant impact on community safety and instill a sense of security among residents.
