Nationwide Anti-ICE Protests Erupt After Activist’s Death
Anger erupted across major U.S. cities this weekend following the fatal shooting of activist Renee Nicole Good by a federal immigration officer. Protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unfolded from New York to California, resulting in arrests and escalating tensions. Demonstrators filled the streets of Austin and Los Angeles, calling for an end to ICE operations amid growing frustration over immigration enforcement practices.
In Austin, Texas, police confirmed that at least five individuals were arrested during protests near the J.J. Pickle Federal Building. Demonstrators had gathered following a march from the site to express their outrage over Good’s death, which occurred during a confrontation with ICE agents in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. Video footage captured police pushing into crowds as tensions flared, with protesters chanting and expressing solidarity with those detained.
Texas officials responded firmly to the unrest. Governor Greg Abbott stated that the Texas Department of Public Safety would not tolerate disruptive protests, emphasizing that while peaceful assembly is protected, violent actions and obstruction of roadways would not be accepted. Lt. Chris Olivarez, a spokesperson for the department, reiterated that public safety concerns guided their response to the protests.
Protesters across the country have rallied under the slogan “ICE Out for Good,” demanding justice for Good, a 37-year-old mother who was killed during an incident described by federal agents as self-defense. This narrative has been met with fierce opposition from activists and local officials who label the shooting as murder. In Austin, the protests intensified as demonstrators claimed that the presence of ICE signifies a breakdown of local and federal authority.
The protests in Los Angeles mirrored the chaos seen in Austin. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in downtown, prompting police to issue dispersal orders as they moved to manage the crowd. The Los Angeles Police Department reported several arrests when individuals refused to comply with orders to leave. Protesters expressed their anger over Good’s death, with some waving upside-down American flags, a traditional signal of distress.
As the protests spread, cities including Portland, Oregon, New York City, and Philadelphia saw similar demonstrations, with organizers claiming that over 1,000 events were planned nationwide. In Minneapolis, where Good was killed, thousands marched through immigrant neighborhoods, chanting her name and demanding accountability. Local officials reported that most protests remained peaceful, although 29 individuals were arrested for vandalism during a previous night of unrest.
Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis stressed the importance of maintaining peace, stating, “We will not counter Donald Trump’s chaos with our own brand of chaos in Minneapolis.” In Washington, protesters gathered outside the White House, echoing the call for the abolition of ICE, while in New York, first-time activists voiced their discontent with immigration enforcement.
The killing of Renee Good has become a pivotal moment in the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policies and enforcement practices in the United States. As protests continue to unfold, law enforcement agencies are preparing for further clashes, reflecting the deep divisions over immigration and the future of ICE in American society.
