Montenegro’s Handball Team Faces Must-Win Match Against Faroes
Montenegro’s national handball team is gearing up for a crucial match against the Faroese Islands today at 18:00 in Oslo, a game they cannot afford to lose. After a disappointing start to the European Championship with a 41:40 defeat to Slovenia, the Montenegrin squad is under pressure to secure a victory to maintain their hopes of advancing in the tournament.
The team’s journey has been tumultuous since their initial encounter with the Faroese Islands during the qualifiers for the 2020 European Championship. On October 24, 2018, Montenegro’s unexpected draw with the Faroese (24:24) shocked the European handball community. Eight months later, however, Montenegro triumphed 24:21, qualifying for the final tournament while the Faroese remained behind with just one point.
Since then, Montenegro has achieved significant milestones, including an impressive 11th place finish at the EHF Euro 2022. In contrast, the Faroese Islands have made remarkable progress, evolving from underdogs into a competitive team that many analysts now favor in the upcoming match. Currently, the Faroese hold one point after drawing against Switzerland, while Montenegro remains scoreless.
The stakes are high for Montenegro as they head into this match. A loss would severely diminish their chances of progressing to the main round of the tournament, where only two teams from the group will advance. Mirko Radovic, the team’s coach, emphasized the importance of today’s match, stating that it is vital to seize every point available.
Vuko Borozan, a key player for Montenegro, reflected on the emotional toll of the previous match against Slovenia. “It was tough to sleep after the loss, but we must move forward,” he said. Borozan acknowledged the team’s strong offensive play, having scored 40 goals, but recognized that they fell short defensively.
In preparation for the match against the Faroese, Borozan highlighted the need for a robust defensive strategy. He noted that the Faroese play at a fast pace, often employing a seven-on-six strategy, which can create challenges for opposing defenses. “If we manage our defense well, we have a great chance to win,” he added.
The atmosphere in Oslo is expected to be electric, with approximately six thousand Faroese supporters traveling to cheer their team. Miodrag Ćorsović, another key player for Montenegro, stressed the importance of maintaining focus and composure. “We need to forget about the Slovenia match and concentrate on what lies ahead. Every game is critical, and we know what we need to do in the next two matches,” he stated.
As the Montenegrin team prepares for their showdown with the Faroese Islands, the players are aware that they must elevate their performance to meet the challenges posed by their opponents. Ćorsović pointed out that the previous match against Slovenia showcased the unpredictability of the tournament, where any team can triumph on a given day.
The Faroese Islands, buoyed by their recent performances, remain a formidable opponent. Hakun Teigum, a prominent player for the Faroese, acknowledged Montenegro’s strengths but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to capitalize on their chances. “With teams like Montenegro, you never know which player will have an outstanding day,” he remarked.
As the clock ticks down to the match, both teams are fully aware of the implications. For Montenegro, this is more than just a game; it is a chance to recover from a setback and reignite their aspirations in the European Championship. The outcome will not only determine their fate in the tournament but also serve as a testament to their resilience and determination to succeed on the international stage.
