Met Police Faces Daily Investigations as Cases of Misconduct Surge

The Metropolitan Police is facing scrutiny as investigations into officer misconduct occur almost daily. Recent statistics indicate that the number of cases has doubled over the past two years, intensifying concerns regarding the conduct of its personnel. From April 2024 to March 2025, the force conducted 301 disciplinary hearings, a significant increase from 155 hearings in the previous year, according to official data.
This surge in investigations follows high-profile incidents, notably the conviction of serving officer Wayne Couzens for the murder of Sarah Everard in 2021. The Metropolitan Police, which employs around 46,000 officers and staff, has recorded “discreditable conduct” as the primary reason for these hearings. In the last year alone, the force dismissed 52 officers for various infractions, a rise from 33 dismissals the previous year.
The statistics reveal a troubling trend in dismissals related to sexual misconduct, which have nearly doubled. Last year, 28 officers were removed from their positions for such offenses, compared to 17 two years ago. Recent cases have highlighted serious allegations, including sexual assault, domestic abuse, and drug use. One notable case involved serving officer PC Tony Watts, who was dismissed only after being convicted of rape.
In another alarming incident, former officer Aaron Goodman was arrested while in possession of imitation firearms and police uniforms, after threatening his then-partner with a fake gun. These cases have raised significant concerns about the culture within the Metropolitan Police.
Andrea Simon, a representative from the End Violence Against Women Coalition, expressed cautious optimism about the actions being taken to address such issues. She stated, “It is positive that action is being taken to root out perpetrators.”
The Metropolitan Police has publicly committed to fostering a healthier internal culture, emphasizing the importance of empowering colleagues to report inappropriate behavior. The force’s spokesperson reaffirmed this commitment, stating that they are dedicated to cultivating an environment where misconduct cannot go unchecked.
As investigations continue, the Metropolitan Police faces the challenge of restoring public confidence while addressing the misconduct that has plagued its ranks. The increase in disciplinary measures signals a potential shift towards greater accountability, but the effectiveness of these efforts remains to be seen.
