Mark Ruffalo Leads Celebrity Protest at Golden Globes Against ICE
The 83rd Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton on January 11, 2026, transformed from a celebration of cinematic achievements into a platform for political protest. As Hollywood’s elite walked the red carpet, many displayed activist pins reading “ICE OUT” and “BE GOOD,” signaling a strong opposition to the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Veteran actor Mark Ruffalo took a prominent stance during the event, publicly sharing the personal significance of his pin. Known for his activism, Ruffalo used the occasion to voice his criticisms of both President Donald Trump and Vice President JV Vance. He wore a “BE GOOD” pin in honor of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman fatally shot in Minneapolis just days before the ceremony. Ruffalo framed his appearance as a dual celebration of the film industry and a call for justice.
In an interview with USA Today, Ruffalo stated, “This is for Renee Nicole Good, who was murdered.” He then shifted his focus to a broader critique of the current administration. “We have a vice president who’s lying about what’s happening. We’re in the middle of a war with Venezuela that we illegally invaded,” he said. Ruffalo emphasized his belief that Trump’s disregard for international law puts the country in jeopardy, calling the president a “convicted felon” and “the worst human being.”
Ruffalo did not hold back, labeling Trump a “paedophile” and warning of the dangers of relying on his moral compass to guide the United States. He concluded by expressing his love for the country, stating, “What I am seeing is not America,” highlighting his concern that the administration has strayed from core American values.
Celebrity Support for the Protest
Ruffalo was not alone in his activism. Many other celebrities joined the silent protest by wearing pins that conveyed similar messages. Ariana Grande combined her “ICE OUT” pin with her evening gown, while comedian Wanda Sykes donned a “BE GOOD” pin. In an interview with Variety, Sykes stated, “We need to speak up and shut this rogue government down. It’s awful what they are doing to people.”
Actors Natasha Lyonne and Jean Smart also showcased the activist pins as they made their way through the red carpet. The event underscored a collective sentiment among Hollywood figures regarding the current immigration policies and the treatment of individuals by ICE.
Ruffalo’s comments alluded to Trump’s legal troubles, including his conviction in May 2024 for 34 counts of felony charges related to falsified business records. Additionally, Trump was found liable for sexual abuse against E. Jean Carroll in a separate civil case, which resulted in a jury awarding her £3.7 million ($5 million) in damages. It is important to clarify that these cases were civil judgments, and Trump has not faced criminal charges related to sex crimes involving minors.
The Golden Globes became a focal point for these discussions, highlighting a growing trend of celebrities using their platforms for social justice advocacy. Ruffalo and his peers aim to raise awareness and prompt action on issues they believe are critical to the nation’s integrity and moral standing.
