Local Art and Music Shine in Upcoming Berkshire Events
The Berkshires will come alive with a series of vibrant events featuring local artists, musicians, and community activities. From art exhibitions to live performances, the week of August 7 to August 10, 2024, promises an array of engaging opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
Art and Culture Take Center Stage
Local artist Diane Firtell will showcase her work at a one-day pop-up event hosted by SALA Boutique at The Foundry in West Stockbridge on August 7. From 14:30 to 19:00, attendees can explore a variety of Firtell’s pieces inspired by nature, including jewelry that has been featured in films such as “Cocktail” and “Earth Girls are Easy.” Visitors will have the chance to purchase small, affordable prints, as well as limited edition works on paper and metal.
Another highlight occurs on August 10, when the Open House Gallery in Great Barrington opens its doors from 13:00 to 19:00 to display artworks by Margaret Walsh Buchte and Thea Knapp-Baker. The event will feature a diverse collection of traditional and abstract pieces, with Buchte’s vibrant portrayals of Berkshire landscapes and Knapp-Baker’s whimsical themes offering something for everyone.
Musical Performances and Community Celebrations
The musical scene is equally exciting, with Joshua Bell, a Grammy Award-winning violinist, performing at Tanglewood in Lenox on August 8 at 20:00. Bell, known for his illustrious career spanning nearly four decades, will be performing Dvořák’s New World Symphony. His extensive experience includes collaborations with major orchestras and performances for several U.S. presidents.
On August 10, The Mount will host Community Day from 11:00 to 18:00. This event promises free admission and a lively atmosphere, featuring live music, performances, games, and food trucks. Highlights include performances by Latin Grammy Award-winning children’s musician MISTER G and a tour of Edith Wharton’s historic home.
The Barrington Stage Company will present the 5th Annual Celebration of Black Voices Festival on August 9 and 10 from noon to 19:00 at The Common in Pittsfield. This family-friendly festival will celebrate local Black artists through music, poetry, dance, and storytelling, providing a platform for underrepresented voices in the arts.
Adding to the musical offerings, the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires presents the dynamic singer-songwriter Michelle Citrin on August 10 at 19:30 at the Duffin Theater in Lenox. Known for her engaging performances that celebrate Jewish culture, Citrin’s concert will feature her popular songs and is expected to draw a significant audience.
For those interested in film, Mad Rose Gallery in Millerton will present a screening of the documentary “Skategoat” on August 10 at 14:00. The film chronicles the life of Leandre Sanders, a talented skater from Venice Beach who turned to skateboarding as a means of escape from the challenges of his environment.
The weekend will also feature the Fire on the Mountain Jam II at Bousquet in Pittsfield on August 9 from 17:00 to 23:00. This high-energy event will gather talented musicians for an evening filled with live music and good vibes against the backdrop of stunning mountain views.
Lastly, the Westside Legends will host their 4th Annual Sweet G Super Soap Box Derby on August 9 from noon to 16:00 in Pittsfield. This community-oriented event encourages children to build and race their own soapbox cars, fostering creativity and friendly competition.
