Kosovo President Assigns Glauk Konjufca to Form New Government
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has officially entrusted Glauk Konjufca, a candidate from the Self-Determination Movement, with the mandate to form a new government. This decision was announced during a press conference in Pristina, where Osmani stated that her choice aligns with the prior rulings of the Constitutional Court.
The announcement comes despite significant opposition from several political parties, including the Democratic Party of Kosovo (DPK), the Democratic League of Kosovo (DSK), and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (ABK). Leaders from these parties have expressed their refusal to support Konjufca’s candidacy, questioning the legitimacy of Osmani’s decision. Ramuš Haradinaj, the leader of ABK, criticized the president’s authority to appoint a new candidate without confirming that the necessary 61 signatures from members of the Kosovo Assembly had been secured.
Haradinaj emphasized on social media that the required majority must be demonstrated through official signatures, warning that any deviation from this process would constitute a serious breach of the Constitution. He characterized the nomination of Konjufca as a continuation of the Self-Determination Movement’s attempts to dominate state institutions against constitutional norms, calling for immediate snap elections to resolve the stalemate.
Support for Konjufca’s candidacy has emerged from certain minority parties, indicating a complex political landscape. The decision to nominate Konjufca was made during a meeting of the Self-Determination Movement’s Main Board. This follows a failed attempt by party leader Albin Kurti to gather sufficient support to assume the position of Prime Minister just days earlier.
As the political situation unfolds, the dynamics within the Kosovo Assembly will be crucial for determining the future of governance in the region. The upcoming weeks will likely reveal whether Konjufca can muster the necessary backing to lead a new coalition or if the opposition will prevail in their calls for fresh elections.
