Kompani Criticizes Mourinho’s Comments on Vinicius Junior

Bayern Munich’s coach, Vincent Kompany, has publicly condemned José Mourinho’s comments following the recent match between Benfica and Real Madrid. Mourinho’s remarks pertained to alleged racist abuse directed at Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, who scored the only goal in Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory. The situation escalated when the match was temporarily halted for ten minutes after Vinicius reported that he had been racially abused by Benfica’s winger, Giovanni Prestiani. UEFA has since launched an investigation into these claims, which Prestiani has denied.

During a press conference ahead of Bayern’s upcoming match against Eintracht Frankfurt, Kompany expressed his concerns regarding Mourinho’s comments. The Portuguese coach faced criticism after he questioned Vinicius’s goal celebration and referenced club legend Eusébio to assert that Benfica is not a racist club.

Kompany stated, “After the match, you have an organization leader, José Mourinho, who essentially attacks Vinicius Junior’s character by mentioning the way he celebrated to discredit what Vinicius is doing right now.” He articulated the gravity of Mourinho’s statement, emphasizing that such comments should not be tolerated within the realm of football.

In his response, Kompany chose to speak in English, noting it as a means to clarify his position. “For me, in terms of leadership, that is a huge mistake and something we should not accept,” he said, criticizing Mourinho’s use of Eusébio’s legacy as an example to downplay the seriousness of racism.

He elaborated on the historical struggles faced by Black players, asking, “Do you know what Black players had to endure in the 1960s? Was he (Mourinho) there to travel with Eusébio to every away game?” Kompany highlighted that the only option for players during that era was often silence, and they had to excel far beyond their peers to receive recognition.

Mourinho did not directly address the criticisms during his statements but instead spoke to the club’s official channel about the challenges of the match against Real Madrid. He admitted that the game was demanding in every aspect, calling it “extremely challenging, both physically and tactically.” He further acknowledged the emotional toll of the events following the match, stating, “From the 51st minute onwards, it has not been easy emotionally to deal with everything that has happened and continues to happen.”

Kompany concluded by offering a nuanced view of Mourinho, acknowledging that while he understands Mourinho’s commitment to his team and club, he believes the comments made were misguided. “I know a lot of people who have worked with Mourinho and have never heard anyone speak poorly of him. I do not judge him as a person, but I know what I have heard. I understand perhaps what he did, but he made a mistake,” he stressed.

The incident has ignited discussions on racism in football, highlighting the ongoing challenges the sport faces in combating discrimination and fostering inclusivity. As UEFA’s investigation unfolds, the football community watches closely for further developments.
