Keir Starmer Faces Backlash for Welcoming Controversial Activist

The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, is encountering escalating criticism for his warm welcome to Egyptian activist Alaa Abd El-Fatah, following his arrival in the UK on December 27, 2023. This controversy stems from Abd El-Fatah’s past social media posts, which included inflammatory and violent rhetoric, leading opponents to accuse the Prime Minister of double standards regarding online speech and justice.

Abd El-Fatah’s arrival came after Egyptian authorities lifted a travel ban. He had been imprisoned for over ten years, with his most recent sentence for “spreading fake news” about torture in Egyptian prisons. Starmer expressed his delight at Abd El-Fatah’s return, labeling the case a top priority for his government. However, the backlash intensified when it was revealed that the Prime Minister was unaware of the full extent of Abd El-Fatah’s historical tweets at the time of his welcome.

The resurfacing of these posts, written between 2010 and 2012, sparked outrage. In these tweets, Abd El-Fatah used derogatory language towards British citizens, expressed hatred for white people, and made calls for violence against police officers and government institutions. Although he has since apologized, claiming his remarks were expressions of youthful anger, critics remain unconvinced.

MP Nick Timothy remarked, “He’s not ‘sorry for tweets’. He’s sorry he’s been exposed. And he’s not a ‘dissident’. He’s a promoter of terrorism and murder.” This sentiment reflects a broader discontent among opposition figures, who highlight the disparity in treatment between Abd El-Fatah and others, such as British citizen Lucy Connolly, who faced imprisonment for offensive tweets.

Critics argue that while some Britons have been prosecuted for their online comments, the government has prioritized the case of a man whose own statements include racist and violent language. The controversy is compounded by the juxtaposition of Starmer’s previous comments in the House of Commons, where he referred to Abd El-Fatah as having been “jailed for the crime of posting on social media.”

Calls for Abd El-Fatah to be stripped of his British citizenship and deported have emerged from senior Conservatives and members of Reform UK. However, the Labour Party has dismissed these demands, citing a lack of legal grounds for such action. Abd El-Fatah was granted British citizenship in 2021, and under current laws, his offensive comments do not meet the threshold required for revocation of nationality.

Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, holds the authority to remove citizenship; however, government sources indicate that such a move would likely face legal challenges, especially considering that Abd El-Fatah has a child residing in the UK, a factor that must be prioritized according to government guidelines.

Human rights organizations recognize Abd El-Fatah as Egypt’s most prominent political prisoner. His release followed extensive campaigning by his family and lobbying from the British government, culminating in a pardon from President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. His mother, Laila Soueif, who was born in Britain, conducted prolonged hunger strikes advocating for his freedom and was hospitalized twice due to her efforts.

Upon his release, Abd El-Fatah expressed a desire to reintegrate into life, stating to the BBC, “I’m learning how to get back into life. I’m doing much better than I would have expected.” Despite this, the political fallout surrounding his welcome shows no signs of abating.

As the debate continues, critics are increasingly contrasting Starmer’s strict stance on domestic online speech with his praise for Abd El-Fatah, intensifying scrutiny of the government’s perceived inconsistency in handling cases of online expression. The Prime Minister now faces mounting pressure to clarify his position amidst this complex and sensitive issue.
