A new exhibition dedicated to the legendary motorcycle racer Joey Dunlop has opened at the Mercury Club in the Isle of Man. The exhibition showcases a diverse collection of memorabilia, including Dunlop’s personal toolbox and the motorcycles he rode during his final Isle of Man TT race. This tribute is available to the public free of charge until the end of race week, making it a must-see for fans and visitors.

The exhibition was officially inaugurated on the Wednesday of qualifying week, attended by over 100 riders, officials, and notable guests, including the Lieutenant Governor and Lady Philippa. Among those present was John McGuinness MBE, a renowned racer and Dunlop’s teammate during his last TT 25 years ago. McGuinness expressed his deep emotions, stating, “I can’t deny that I’ve found it quite emotional looking at some of the images and items in the exhibition. It’s amazing.”

Honoring a Racing Legend

As part of the exhibition, McGuinness contributed a pair of his leathers worn during the 2000 Formula One race, where he secured third place alongside Dunlop and runner-up Michael Rutter. Additionally, Michael Dunlop MBE, Joey’s nephew, has constructed a replica of the Honda 1000cc SP1 that his uncle rode to victory. Dunlop’s final TT took place just weeks before his tragic death in Estonia at the age of 48.

Michael Dunlop plans to honor his late uncle by riding the replica bike during a tribute lap next Friday. Other notable attendees at the exhibition’s opening included contemporaries such as Eddie Laycock, Ian Lougher, and Dave Leach, as well as modern racers like Dean Harrison, Nathan Harrison, and Horst Saiger.

The exhibition serves as a poignant reminder of Dunlop’s impact on the world of motorcycle racing. Peter Duke and the island’s former “Minister for Fun,” David Cretney, also paid tribute to one of the most beloved figures in road racing history.

This moving memorial not only celebrates Dunlop’s legacy but also fosters a sense of community among racers and fans alike, ensuring that his spirit continues to inspire future generations. The Isle of Man TT remains a pinnacle event in motorsport, and exhibitions like this highlight the rich history and passion that define it.
