Irish President Catherine Connolly Begins Historic Visit to NI
Irish President Catherine Connolly is set to embark on her inaugural official visit to Northern Ireland, commencing a three-day engagement that highlights her commitment to fostering relationships within the region. The visit begins on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, where she will meet with First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly at Stormont Castle. During her visit, President Connolly will also deliver a significant address at Ulster University in Belfast.
Throughout the day, the President aims to engage with various community initiatives in Belfast, showcasing her dedication to grassroots efforts. Following her time in Belfast, Connolly’s itinerary includes engagements in Londonderry on Thursday and Friday, further emphasizing her commitment to Northern Ireland as outlined in her inauguration address.
Catherine Connolly’s background is marked by resilience and determination. Born in Galway and raised in a social housing estate, she is the ninth of 14 children. Connolly pursued a degree in psychology with German before transitioning to a career as a clinical psychologist with a County Galway health board. Her journey into law began when she opted for night classes, ultimately qualifying as a barrister in 1991.
Entering the political arena in 1999, Connolly served as a councillor in Galway for 17 years, including a year as mayor. Her political journey has been characterized by both challenges and triumphs. After a fallout with the Labour Party regarding her candidacy alongside Michael D. Higgins in the 2007 general election, she left the party and later campaigned as an independent. Despite early setbacks in her attempts to secure a seat in the Dáil, she succeeded in 2016, making history as the first woman elected to chair debates as Leas-Cheann Comhairle (Deputy Speaker) in 2020.
Connolly’s political alignment has garnered broad support, uniting various parties, including Sinn Féin, the Social Democrats, and People Before Profit, during her presidential campaign. Outside her political commitments, she is known for her passion for the Irish language and her enthusiasm for sports, having run marathons and played badminton competitively in her youth.
As President Connolly’s visit unfolds, it is expected to strengthen ties between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, reinforcing her commitment to unity and collaboration in her role as President.
