Friends Turn Adversity into Success with Trainer Store in Liverpool

Sam Byrne and Charlie McDonough transformed personal adversity into business success by launching their popular trainer store, The Block P, in Liverpool. This venture not only showcases their passion for trainers but also fosters a strong community among sneaker enthusiasts in the city.
The story of The Block P began with Charlie McDonough, 29, who started the business with merely £12 in his bank account. After a severe car accident at 18, he decided to channel his love for trainers into a business. Initially selling second-hand shoes on platforms like Depop and Vinted, Charlie quickly expanded his reach, opening a physical store on Renshaw Street in Liverpool city centre.
Sam Byrne, 25, joined The Block P as co-owner after experiencing his life-altering accident while playing football. Following a fractured skull and multiple bleeds on the brain, he chose to leave his job during recovery, betting on his entrepreneurial spirit. Sam connected with Charlie in August 2022, and together they cultivated a thriving enterprise.
Today, The Block P stands as a beloved destination for sneaker aficionados in Liverpool, boasting a wide range of Nike 110s among its offerings. Their success caught the attention of Nike HQ, and they have received exclusive trainer gifts from Araloyin Oshunremi, a star from Netflix’s *Top Boy*.
Building a Community Through Shared Experiences
Sam’s journey into The Block P was fueled by his past experiences with trauma and recovery. In discussing his decision to pursue business, he stated, “I decided to quit my job when I was in the hospital because the recovery was expected to take six months. I didn’t particularly like my job anyway, so I thought, I’m going to give myself six months to make something of myself and try to run a business.”
After leaving the hospital, Sam frequently visited The Block P, where he and Charlie quickly bonded over shared ambitions and backgrounds. Sam’s prior experience in the stock market and reselling gave him a solid foundation for business. He began by working one day a week in the shop, which soon turned into a full-time commitment.
“Me, Charlie and the business have come so far, but it’s weird because at the same time, we know we’ve only just started,” Sam remarked, reflecting on their journey.
Giving Back to the Community
As The Block P continues to expand, Sam and Charlie are committed to supporting local causes. On September 28, 2023, they will participate in the Aintree Half Marathon to raise funds for James’ Place, a charity focused on men’s mental health. The motivation behind this initiative stems from the tragic loss of two friends to suicide, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness.
Sam commented on the challenge of running the half marathon in their 110 slippers, saying, “You tell people you’re doing a half marathon, and they say okay. Then you mention the slippers and they’re like, oh my God, you’re going to do long-term lasting damage to your feet, what are you doing?”
The duo hopes that their efforts will inspire others in their community who may struggle with mental health issues. Sam believes that visibility is crucial: “If it inspires one person to do something and get themselves in a better place, then that’s what it’s all about.”
Reflecting on their achievements, Sam expresses gratitude for the opportunities they’ve created through hard work and dedication. He emphasizes the importance of persistence, stating, “It’s the work you do when no one’s watching that counts for me.”
Through resilience, passion, and community focus, Sam Byrne and Charlie McDonough exemplify how personal challenges can lead to remarkable successes, making a positive impact in Liverpool and beyond.
