Floyd Mayweather’s Rematch with Pacquiao Sparks Controversy
Floyd Mayweather Jr. will face Manny Pacquiao in a highly anticipated rematch on September 19, 2025, at The Sphere in Las Vegas. This announcement has stirred significant debate within the boxing community, with many questioning the implications of such a fight more than a decade after their initial meeting. The first bout, held in May 2015, was a landmark event, with Mayweather winning by unanimous decision and unifying three of the four major welterweight titles.
The rematch comes as Mayweather prepares for a separate exhibition match against heavyweight legend Mike Tyson on April 25 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While the exhibition bout will not affect his professional record, the fight with Pacquiao will directly impact Mayweather’s impressive 50-0 career status.
Speaking to FightHype, Jeff Mayweather, Floyd’s uncle and former trainer, shared his thoughts on the upcoming rematch. He expressed concern about the current state of boxing, describing it as “sad.” According to Jeff Mayweather, the sport appears to be relying heavily on the return of past stars to draw interest and revive its popularity.
He remarked, “Boxing is in a sad state, with former champions like Floyd and Manny being called back.” This sentiment reflects a growing anxiety within the boxing community regarding the future of the sport. Jeff Mayweather also predicted a decisive victory for his nephew, stating that he believes Pacquiao’s performance has noticeably declined over the years.
The upcoming Mayweather-Pacquiao II is set to be broadcast live on Netflix, which marks a significant shift in how major boxing events are presented to audiences. The choice to stream on a platform like Netflix could make the fight accessible to a broader range of viewers, potentially increasing its reach beyond traditional pay-per-view formats.
As anticipation builds for this rematch, it raises questions about the relevance of legacy fights in today’s boxing landscape and the ongoing struggles to attract new fans. With significant revenue implications and the potential to reshape narratives in the sport, the Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch is not just a clash of two boxing icons but a reflection of the challenges facing boxing as a whole.
