Tensions escalated dramatically across the Middle East as the conflict between Israel and Iran deepened, resulting in an attack on the US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 15, 2024. The incident occurred during a series of military operations that have unfolded over four days, following initial strikes by Israel and the United States against Iranian targets.

Israeli military forces reported that they were engaged in intercepting a wave of missiles fired from Iran, which were aimed at multiple sites, including Jerusalem. Shortly after midnight local time on Tuesday (2200 GMT Monday), the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the missile launches and stated, “Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat.” Concurrently, the IDF was conducting airstrikes in Tehran and Beirut.

Witnesses in Riyadh reported loud explosions in the diplomatic quarter, a hub for foreign embassies and residences. Two drones struck the US Embassy, igniting a fire. A spokesman for the Saudi defense ministry confirmed the attack, and the embassy advised all personnel to avoid the area, announcing its closure for the day.

The military in Qatar intercepted two ballistic missiles early Tuesday, indicating a broader regional threat. Reports from Doha included loud explosions, suggesting that the military was on high alert.

In Iran, explosions were heard in Tehran and surrounding regions, including Karaj and Isfahan, although details on the specific targets remained unclear. Iranian state media acknowledged explosions near the headquarters of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), which Israel claimed to have targeted due to its alleged calls for the destruction of Israel.

China’s foreign ministry has called for all parties involved to exercise restraint and ensure the safety of shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas transport. Spokeswoman Mao Ning urged an immediate cessation of military operations to avoid further escalation and protect the global economy.

In a related development, drone strikes attributed to Iran targeted an Omani port, damaging a fuel tank but resulting in no casualties. Additionally, strikes in northern Iraq were reported to have hit a camp housing Iranian Kurdish fighters and their families.

The US Embassy in Kuwait announced its closure until further notice after Iranian attacks were reported in the area. In response to the conflict, the Israeli military has deployed troops along its southern Lebanon border, describing this as a “forward defense” measure. The IDF has also targeted Hezbollah positions in Beirut as part of its ongoing military campaign against the Iran-backed group.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated that the military would take control of additional positions in Lebanon. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump suggested that the United States would retaliate swiftly after the embassy attack. Speaking to NewsNation, Trump stated, “You’ll find out soon” how the US plans to respond.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed this sentiment in a Fox News interview, asserting that the US-Israeli operation against Iran would be “a quick and decisive action,” although he acknowledged it might take some time to achieve its objectives.

The US State Department has issued a warning for Americans to leave many Middle Eastern countries, including Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, citing serious safety risks. Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar urged citizens to depart using available commercial transportation.

According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), there have been 101 casualties reported in Iran since the conflict began, including 85 civilian deaths. A general from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened to target any vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, warning that oil prices could rise to $200 per barrel in the coming days.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the US acted against Iran in anticipation of further strikes against American forces. He stated, “We knew that if we didn’t preemptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties.”

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for wider conflict and its implications for global stability.
