Emma Raducanu launched her Australian Open campaign with a commanding victory over Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, securing her place in the second round. The British number one showcased her skills, winning the match in straight sets while conceding only five games. Raducanu is set to face Russia’s Anastasia Potapova next, a matchup that will mark their first encounter on the court.

Raducanu Thrills Fans with New Nickname

The 23-year-old proved to be a crowd favorite, earning the affectionate nickname “Radu” from enthusiastic fans in Melbourne. Throughout the match, supporters chanted her new moniker, with one dedicated fan catching Raducanu’s attention, earning the title of “number one fan.”

In her post-match press conference, Raducanu expressed her delight at the reception she received. “Yeah, apparently Down Under I’ve got Radu. Never heard that before. Pretty original,” she stated. “I loved the support. I thought it was great on both sides. To have that on my side, really, in the big moments, it was a good spur of encouragement.” She added that she hoped to locate her number one fan for future matches.

Looking Ahead to the Next Round

Raducanu has yet to advance beyond the third round at the Australian Open, with her best performance occurring last year. This time, she is optimistic, especially with the prospect of facing Aryna Sabalenka should she win against Potapova.

Despite her success, Raducanu expressed dissatisfaction with her scheduling, having played at midnight on Rod Laver Arena. However, she welcomed the two-day break before her next match on January 21, 2024. “I’m really happy to have two days, especially playing so late,” she noted. “Switching off after such a late match is very difficult. By the time we finish with our routines afterward, cool down, the adrenaline is so high.”

Raducanu is also managing her recovery from a foot injury sustained during the off-season, which has impacted her training with new coach Francisco Roig. As she prepares for the upcoming matches, Raducanu remains focused on her performance and the support from her fans, which continues to motivate her on the court.
