Edward Enninful Sounds Alarm on Fashion’s Shift Away from Diversity

Edward Enninful, the former editor-in-chief of British Vogue, has raised concerns about a potential regression in the fashion industry regarding diversity. He noted that a trend towards extreme thinness and Eurocentric beauty standards is resurfacing, marking a troubling shift. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s *Radical with Amol Rajan* during London Fashion Week, Enninful stated that anti-diversity sentiments are gaining traction, reflecting a moment where “one type is the norm.”
Enninful, who departed from British Vogue in 2023, has since launched a new media platform called EE72, named after his birth year of 1972. He describes the platform as “inclusive,” with its inaugural quarterly print edition featuring actress Julia Roberts, who is 57, on the cover. Enninful expressed optimism about his return to the industry, emphasizing that it is “in flux” and acknowledges the “a lot of work to be done” in terms of representation.
Born in Ghana and arriving in London as an asylum seeker, Enninful’s journey in the fashion world is notable. At just 18, he became the fashion director of i-D magazine and went on to become the first Black editor-in-chief of British Vogue. He utilized his platform to advocate for broader representation, aiming to reflect “the world we live in today.”
In the discussion, Enninful confirmed the existence of an “anti-woke moment” in society, pointing to political trends that stigmatize anything outside traditional norms. He remarked, “Woke is a dirty word,” reflecting on the global political climate that increasingly marginalizes diverse perspectives.
Addressing Speculation and Controversy
Enninful also responded to speculation regarding his relationship with Dame Anna Wintour, who is stepping down as editor-in-chief of American Vogue after a remarkable 37 years. He dismissed claims of a falling out, clarifying that his decision to leave was mutual. “Anna asked me to give them a year’s notice so they could find my replacement,” he explained, referring to Chioma Nnadi as his successor. He expressed gratitude for Wintour’s support, stating, “Anna and I, we text each other all the time. You’re going to see us together.”
Furthermore, Enninful shared his perspective on a recent advertising campaign by American Eagle, featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. The campaign’s tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” garnered criticism for potentially promoting a racially exclusive beauty standard. Enninful noted, “I thought people really read into it probably deeper than I would have,” while acknowledging that the choice of a blonde woman in the advertisement could indeed provoke a strong reaction. He concluded that this incident reveals a divided public sentiment, highlighting ongoing discussions about representation in advertising.
As the fashion industry grapples with these issues, Enninful’s insights underscore the importance of striving for inclusivity. His journey and continued advocacy serve as reminders of the ongoing need to challenge conventional beauty standards and embrace a broader spectrum of representation in all aspects of fashion and media.
