Eddie the Eagle Edwards, the iconic ski jumper who captured hearts globally during the 1988 Calgary Olympic Games, is preparing for a significant life change. Nearly four decades after he made his Olympic debut, Edwards is set to leave Gloucestershire, the county where he first learned to ski, as he embarks on a new chapter with his partner, Karen Pearce.

Edwards, now 62, gained fame for his underdog story, competing in a sport that was relatively unknown to many in the UK at the time. Despite his lack of experience, he famously soared down the 90-metre ski jump, capturing the attention of millions and earning the affectionate nickname “Eddie the Eagle.” His journey has been documented in books and a Hollywood film, yet he remains a figure often associated with endearing clumsiness, famously walking into glass doors with his skis at Calgary Airport.

As he prepares to move to Kingsclere on the Hampshire-Berkshire border, Edwards reflects on his life and achievements. “I’ve always enjoyed dancing and I used to go to this dance in Chippenham,” he shared, recalling how he met Pearce at a tea dance. Their relationship, blossoming over the past three and a half years, is now leading them to cohabitate in a new house they have purchased together.

“My work still takes me all over the UK and sometimes around the world, so it doesn’t matter where I live,” Edwards noted. He is enthusiastic about the move, which will allow Pearce to maintain her gardening clients while he continues his various engagements. Edwards acknowledges the bittersweet nature of leaving Gloucestershire, where he has deep roots, including his two daughters, Ottilie Rose and Honey May, from his previous marriage.

While he acknowledges the change, he plans to maintain strong ties to his former home. “It’s only an hour’s drive away,” he remarked, emphasizing that he would still visit the Gloucester Ski Centre, where his own skiing journey began as a teenager.

Edwards’ past is filled with challenges, including a bankruptcy that stemmed from complicated financial dealings after his Olympic fame. He later studied law at De Montfort University, driven by a desire to better understand his financial situation. Despite these struggles, Edwards has found a renewed sense of stability and happiness in his personal and professional life.

“I paid my mortgage off 10 years ago, so that’s all done and dusted,” he explained, adding that he prefers to invest in experiences rather than material possessions. His successful speaking engagements and appearances continue to support his lifestyle, allowing him to travel extensively.

As the 2026 Winter Olympics approach, Edwards finds himself reflecting on his Olympic experience while remaining active. He has maintained a love for skiing, continuing to participate in the sport whenever possible. Despite his past injuries, he is in good health and still enjoys the thrill of skiing across various locations worldwide.

When asked about the upcoming Olympics, he expressed uncertainty about his schedule, saying, “I try to watch the Winter Olympics, but it’s usually when I’m busy travelling.” While he enjoys winter sports, he admits a preference for watching films over competitive sports.

Throughout his life, Eddie the Eagle has faced underestimation and skepticism, yet he continues to defy expectations. He hopes to leave a legacy that inspires others to pursue their dreams with resilience and determination. “I want to be remembered for putting a smile on people’s faces,” he said.

As he embraces this new phase in his life, Edwards remains a beloved figure, embodying the spirit of perseverance and joy that has defined his remarkable journey from a young ski enthusiast to an Olympic icon.
