Cradley Heath Sports Club Plans 23-Room B&B to Boost Revenue
Plans are underway for the Cradley Heath Sports and Social Club to transform part of its facility into a 23-room bed and breakfast. The proposal aims to address the club’s financial difficulties and was submitted by the owners, Westbourne Leisure, to Sandwell Council.
The club, located on Upper High Street in Cradley Heath, has operated since 2005. According to the planning application, the club is in “real jeopardy” without significant investment to develop new revenue streams. The owners noted that the existing bar, games room, and ground-floor function space require refurbishment to enhance profitability.
The proposal outlines converting the underused first-floor function room and dining space into a B&B. Currently, these areas, which can accommodate up to 130 guests, do not generate sufficient income and often remain empty. The planning documents indicated that the club’s reliance on bar trade as its primary source of income is unsustainable without diversification.
Revitalizing the Social Club
A statement included with the application highlights the changing landscape of social clubs, emphasizing the need to adapt to meet the demands of modern patrons. “Social and working men’s clubs have changed significantly since their original conception and as such so have the requirements of the current customer base,” the statement reads.
The renovation plans include installing 23 en-suite bedrooms, one of which will be accessible for individuals with disabilities. The proposal also includes upgrading the toilet facilities and creating new accommodation for management, all designed to meet current standards.
The introduction of overnight accommodations is intended to support the club’s operations, particularly during weekdays when visitor numbers tend to decline. This new offering is expected to attract traveling businesspeople and workers, contributing to a more sustainable business model for the club.
Addressing Financial Challenges
The club’s management recognizes the pressing need for additional facilities to maintain its viability. The planning application articulates that without the new revenue streams, the club faces serious financial challenges.
The proposal reflects a broader trend among social clubs, which must evolve to remain relevant in today’s competitive leisure landscape. By diversifying its offerings, Cradley Heath Sports and Social Club aims to ensure its survival while serving the community in a new capacity.
As the planning process unfolds, the future of this local institution hangs in the balance, with hopes pinned on its ability to adapt to changing market demands.
