Coroner Calls for Action After Farmer’s Suicide Raises Alarm
Urgent concerns have emerged following the death of a farmer found with a gunshot wound in an outbuilding. Samuel Dickinson, aged 39, was discovered on September 15, 2025, at his farm near Blackrod, Greater Manchester. An inquest into his death determined it was a suicide, prompting a coroner to scrutinize the existing UK gun licensing laws.
Dickinson, who held both a firearms and shotgun licence, was found with a shotgun wound to the head in a shed on his property. His family alerted the authorities after noticing a shotgun missing from their gun cabinet. Tragically, he was located in the outbuilding during a search conducted by family members.
Coroner’s Report Highlights Legislative Gaps
Michael Pemberton, the Manchester West Area Coroner, issued a report to the Home Office and the Department for Health and Social Care. He outlined the circumstances surrounding Dickinson’s death and expressed concerns over potential risks posed by current firearms legislation. Pemberton stated, “There is a risk of further deaths unless action is taken.”
The inquest revealed that existing laws do not require individuals with firearms licences to report any new medical conditions, including mental health issues, that may impair their ability to safely possess firearms. Additionally, there is no obligation for general practitioners to note a patient’s firearms licence status in their medical records, which could assist in identifying and reporting potential concerns to the police.
Pemberton emphasized that these legislative gaps could lead to future tragedies, stating there were clear risks involved without necessary reforms. In his report, he called for immediate attention to these issues and requested a response from the relevant authorities within 56 days.
Government Response and Community Support
A spokesperson for the government responded to the coroner’s findings, expressing condolences to Dickinson’s family. They acknowledged the tragedy of every suicide and stated, “We will carefully consider the coroner’s report and the issues raised in this case.” The Home Office noted that applicants for firearms licences are already required to provide relevant medical information, including details about mental health conditions and substance abuse.
In memory of Samuel Dickinson, community members have shown support through various initiatives. The annual Haigh Aspull and Blackrod Christmas Tractor Run has raised funds to honour his memory, reflecting the impact he had on those around him. Tributes on social media described Dickinson as “the absolute best” and a beloved friend to many.
For those seeking emotional support, the Samaritans offer a 24-hour helpline at 116 123, providing assistance to anyone in distress.
The tragic circumstances surrounding Samuel Dickinson’s death have opened a critical dialogue about the need for legislative reforms regarding gun licensing in the UK. As the coroner’s report awaits a response, the urgency for change grows, highlighting the importance of safeguarding public health and safety.
