Burray Boys Organize 20-Mile Cycle Fundraiser for Air Ambulance

A recent accident has prompted two young boys from Burray to launch a significant fundraiser for Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA). Caleb Sutherland and his friend Louie Wilson plan to undertake a 20-mile cycling challenge, inspired by Caleb’s father, Gavin Sutherland, who experienced a serious incident just weeks prior.

On March 22, 2024, Gavin Sutherland was injured when a battery exploded in his front trouser pocket while he was working at Sheila Fleet jewellery. He described the moment as startling; the battery detonated spontaneously without any apparent cause. “All of a sudden I just felt heat. It was like a firework — it just went off!” Gavin recounted. The explosion resulted in burns that required him to be airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for urgent treatment, including skin graft surgery.

Gavin’s wife, Deborah, along with their children, Caleb and Ena, waited anxiously in Burray for news of his condition. They expressed immense gratitude for the air ambulance service, which provided critical transportation to the hospital when local medical facilities could not meet his needs. Now back home, Gavin is recovering and thankful for the swift response that likely saved him from further complications.

In light of this experience, Caleb, aged nine, and his ten-year-old friend Louie are determined to give back. They will cycle from The Sands Hotel in Burray to Burwick Pier in South Ronaldsay and back, a route that challenges their endurance and spirit. The boys have already raised over £1,000 in sponsorship for SCAA ahead of their ride, which is scheduled for April 19, 2024.

Caleb shared his motivation for the fundraiser, saying, “We want to help other people who might need the air ambulance, just like my dad did.” The boys are eager to contribute to a service that plays a vital role in emergency healthcare across Scotland.
