Booker Prize 2025 Shortlist Revealed: Engaging the BookTok Generation

The shortlist for the 2025 Booker Prize was unveiled on March 15, 2025, during a live event at London’s Southbank Centre, hosted by chair and former Booker winner Roddy Doyle. This year, the prize aims to connect with the younger, digitally-savvy audience, particularly those engaged in the BookTok community. With a reputation for elitism, the Booker Prize seeks to shed its traditional image and become more accessible to a broader audience.
The shortlisted titles include a diverse range of voices and stories, featuring works such as The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by former Booker winner Kiran Desai, Flesh by David Szalay, and The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller. Other notable entries are The Rest of Our Lives by Ben Markovits, Flashlight by Susan Choi, and Audition by Katie Kitamura. While this year’s shortlist does not include any debut authors, a new award has been established in memory of the late Hilary Mantel, a two-time Booker winner, to support first-time writers.
The decision to livestream the announcement reflects a shift in how literary prizes engage with the public. Readers increasingly expect to be part of the conversation surrounding literature, much like the interactive nature of social media platforms. This year’s event showcased behind-the-scenes discussions, emphasizing a more inclusive approach to the prize.
While the judging process remains confidential, historical insights from past judges highlight the complexities of literary evaluation. Renowned judge Rebecca West once described some candidates as “curiously dull” and criticized others for being “grossly over-written.” This confidentiality ensures that judges can make candid assessments without external pressure.
The current shortlist has garnered positive attention, with its rich diversity and depth. According to Doyle, the novels are “brilliantly human,” exploring themes of connection and coexistence. This year’s selection contrasts sharply with recent trends in reading, where reports indicate a decline in leisure reading and literary engagement.
In a notable development, the Booker Prize’s presence on social media platforms like TikTok has surged, fostering discussions among a younger demographic. The rise of book influencers and the popularity of online book clubs have created a vibrant community around literary discourse, suggesting that the Booker Prize remains relevant in contemporary culture.
The prize is not only about celebrating established authors; it is also about nurturing emerging talent. The newly launched award in Mantel’s name aims to highlight first-time writers, while another initiative recognizes popular titles from the Bookstagram community. This dual approach allows for a rich tapestry of literary voices to be celebrated.
As reading habits evolve, the Booker Prize continues to adapt, balancing its prestigious legacy with a modern, engaging approach. The increasing popularity of recent winners, such as Douglas Stuart’s Shuggie Bain and Samantha Harvey’s Orbital, demonstrates the prize’s ability to resonate with a wide audience. With this year’s shortlist showcasing titles of varying lengths, including one at a substantial 700 pages, it challenges the notion of diminishing attention spans.
In a world marked by division, literature offers a unique space for connection and understanding. Ayòbámi Adébáyò, one of this year’s judges, emphasized the “communality of fiction,” highlighting how storytelling can foster a shared experience. As the 2025 Booker Prize approaches, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of literature to engage, inspire, and unite readers across generations.
