Bills Release Taron Johnson and Curtis Samuel Ahead of New Season
The Buffalo Bills have decided to part ways with two players as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season. According to ESPN, the team is releasing starting nickelback Taron Johnson and wide receiver Curtis Samuel. These moves are part of the franchise’s efforts to comply with salary cap regulations ahead of the new league year.
Releasing both Johnson and Samuel will save the Bills approximately $7.9 million in cap space, with Johnson contributing $1.9 million and Samuel accounting for around $6 million. Additionally, the team has opted not to designate Johnson as a post-June 1 release, which would have provided a further savings of nearly $7 million.
Shifts in Team Strategy and Player Performance
These roster changes follow the Bills’ recent acquisition of wide receiver DJ Moore, previously of the Carolina Panthers, which indicates a strategic shift in the team’s offensive approach. The decision to release Johnson is significant, especially as the Bills transition their defensive structure from a 4-3 to a 3-4 formation under new coordinator Jim Leonhard. Johnson, who has been with the team since being drafted in the fourth round in 2018, has played a vital role in the Bills’ defense over the past eight seasons under former coach Sean McDermott.
During his tenure, Johnson established himself as a reliable starter, particularly excelling in nickel coverage. Since 2020, the Bills have utilized nickel personnel more than any other team in the league, a testament to Johnson’s effectiveness in that role. His most memorable moment came during the 2020 postseason when he recorded a pivotal 101-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens.
Leonhard expressed optimism about Johnson’s potential in a new role, stating, “He knows that we’re going to communicate with him and find out what’s right because he’s been an extremely productive player in the NFL.” Johnson’s versatility and experience will likely play a crucial role as the Bills adjust their defensive philosophy.
Curtis Samuel’s Struggles in Buffalo
On the other hand, Samuel’s time with the Bills was marked by injury struggles and limited success on the field. In his two seasons with the team, he participated in only 20 regular-season games, recording 38 receptions for 334 yards and two touchdowns, along with a modest five carries for 14 yards. The decision to release him allows the Bills to free up cap space while moving forward with a different roster strategy.
As the Bills continue to reshape their team ahead of the new NFL season, these releases mark a pivotal moment in their effort to enhance both their offense and defense. The franchise aims to position itself for success in a highly competitive league, and these decisions reflect their commitment to building a stronger, more cohesive team.
