Bills GM Defends Coaching Change Amid Fan Backlash
The Buffalo Bills’ decision to replace longtime head coach Sean McDermott with Joe Brady has sparked considerable backlash among fans. Brandon Beane, the team’s president of football operations and general manager, addressed the controversy in a recent interview with Go Long, asserting that the focus should be on what is best for the team.
Beane’s remarks come after the Bills terminated McDermott’s nine-year tenure following their defeat to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round last month. During his time with the franchise, McDermott led the Bills to seven consecutive playoff appearances, making the decision to part ways particularly contentious.
In the interview, Beane expressed his indifference to external criticism, stating, “F— the outside. It’s about the right selection for this team. And if we win, they’ll love it.” His comments highlight the internal confidence he has in Brady, who has been promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach.
Recent polling conducted by the Buffalo News reveals significant discontent among fans regarding the coaching change. Over 75 percent of respondents disagreed with the decision to fire McDermott, while less than 38 percent supported the choice of Brady as head coach. Beane acknowledged the scrutiny he faces, emphasizing that his own job security could hinge on Brady’s performance.
“It’s the same thing I said when I took Josh Allen. If I’m wrong, the moving company will be at my house,” Beane remarked. He expressed a commitment to making decisions based on his convictions rather than succumbing to external pressures. “I understand, and I’m not going to have regret of choosing someone to appease the outside if I thought it should have been something different.”
Despite the negative feedback, Beane is resolute in his choice, referring to other unidentified fan polls that indicated that around 8 percent approved of the coaching hires. He stated, “I would love for everyone to cheer every move, but it’s not about winning the press conference. It’s about winning games over there.”
As the Bills prepare for the upcoming season, the pressure is now on Brady to deliver results and win over the skeptical fanbase. With high expectations set against the backdrop of McDermott’s successful tenure, the new head coach faces a significant challenge in proving that the transition will ultimately benefit the team.
