University Student Alex Riches Wins Non-League Management Debut

A remarkable achievement unfolded in the world of non-league football as Alex Riches, a 20-year-old university student, celebrated a successful debut as the manager of Lowestoft Town. The match, held on March 15, 2024, saw Lowestoft secure a 2-0 victory over Mildenhall Town in the Isthmian League North Division.

Riches, currently in his second year of a BSc (Hons) in Sport Performance Analysis at the University of Suffolk, has been honing his skills as an intern with Ipswich Town, where he serves as a goalkeeping analyst for both the Under-18 and Under-21 teams. His unexpected managerial opportunity arose when he was called upon to oversee the match against Mildenhall Town.

Reflecting on his first game in charge, Riches expressed his excitement: “It was a surreal moment taking charge of my first game. Coming into this season, if I was told I would have an opportunity like this, I would have said ‘you’re lying!’ Having that buzz of a victory, and a good performance to go along with it, I couldn’t have asked for a better feeling really.”

Riches’ journey into football management comes after an injury at age 18 curtailed his playing career. This setback ignited a passion for analysis and tactics, leading him to work remotely for a Swedish U19 club as a match analyst and serve as a goalkeeper coach with Great Yarmouth Town. His current internship at Ipswich Town has proven invaluable, providing him with hands-on experience working with professional goalkeepers.

“The internship has also been massive,” Riches noted. “Working with professional goalkeepers at Ipswich Town has taught me so many details, little and big. Being able to bounce off some of the best coaches in the game has been eye-opening.” He also praised the Sport Performance Analysis course for helping him build connections and expand his knowledge in the field.
