Arsenal Secures Late Win Against Wolves with Dramatic Own Goal
Arsenal clinched a dramatic late victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on October 21, 2023, thanks to an own goal from Yerson Mosquera in the 94th minute. The Gunners appeared to be on the verge of dropping vital points in their title chase when Tolu Arokodare equalized during stoppage time. However, a well-placed cross from Bukayo Saka created the opportunity for Mosquera’s misstep, allowing Arsenal to escape with a 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.
The match initially seemed to favor Arsenal after a fortuitous own goal from goalkeeper Sam Johnstone put them ahead. Yet, as the game progressed, the Gunners struggled to maintain their lead. Arokodare’s late strike brought the momentum in favor of Wolves, putting pressure on Arsenal to respond quickly. That urgency paid off when Saka’s persistence and the movement of Gabriel Jesus forced Mosquera into the decisive error.
Following the match, Arsenal legend Ian Wright took to Instagram to commend Saka and Jesus for their contributions. “Well done guys, that’s not easy,” Wright wrote. “Get your football fix. Again we weren’t at our best, but we got the three points at home, which we have to do. What can I say, well done Saka again my friend. Came up with the goods.” Despite the relief of a last-minute victory, Wright emphasized the team’s need to improve as they pursue the league title.
Arteta’s Concerns Amidst Victory
Despite the jubilant outcome, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance, labeling it “unacceptable.” He noted that, while the team was relieved to secure the win, they had allowed Wolves to create unnecessary chances. “We generated more opportunities in the second half,” Arteta said. “But we had a period of two or three minutes where we were totally passive, displaying defensive habits that are nowhere near the levels required.”
Arteta acknowledged that the match could have turned the other way if Wolves had converted their chances. A draw would have allowed Manchester City to potentially overtake Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, but the win left the Gunners five points ahead of their nearest rivals going into the next round of fixtures.
Arsenal’s defensive struggles linger, further complicated by injuries. Ben White suffered a hamstring issue during the match and is expected to face a lengthy recovery. With key players like Gabriel, Cristhian Mosquera, and Riccardo Calafiori already sidelined, the team’s depth will be tested in the coming weeks. Arteta commented on White’s situation, stating, “We had to risk William (Saliba) today. It was not the best call to play 90 minutes, but we do not have anyone else.”
As Arsenal prepares for their upcoming matches, the focus will be on addressing their defensive weaknesses while maintaining their position at the top of the table. The resilience shown in securing the late win against Wolves may serve as a crucial confidence booster as they navigate the challenges ahead in their campaign.
