Army Chief Calls for Decisive Action Against Terrorism in Nigeria
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Nigeria, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has urged troops of the North-East Joint Task Force, known as Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), to prepare for a significant offensive against the extremist groups Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). In a speech delivered at the Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State, on October 20, 2023, General Shaibu emphasized that this operation represents a critical juncture in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against insurgency.
This latest phase in the military’s efforts aims to deliver a decisive blow to the terrorist threats that have long plagued the region. General Shaibu stated that the upcoming operations will determine the nation’s ability to effectively combat terrorism moving forward. “You have been training to defeat the terrorists disturbing the North-East. This time, you are going to do it differently,” he declared, assuring troops that all necessary resources and new operational platforms have been supplied.
The Army Chief highlighted the importance of this initiative, indicating that it would be led by a new generation of soldiers who must build upon the successes of their predecessors. He made it clear that the responsibility for delivering a decisive victory now lies with the current troops. Reports indicate that while Boko Haram and ISWAP have been weakened, they are regrouping around the Lake Chad axis, taking advantage of vulnerabilities in border security. Military analysts caution that shifts in global geopolitics could embolden these militant groups if Nigeria’s offensive efforts falter.
To bolster the troops’ capabilities, General Shaibu announced the deployment of experienced officers and upgraded military assets, including enhanced surveillance and precision strike capabilities. “Those before you have done it. This is your own time,” he stated, underlining the importance of operational readiness.
During his address, General Shaibu also underscored the significance of troop welfare, linking it directly to morale and combat performance. “Your welfare has been taken care of—from improved rations and cost allowances to prompt payment of entitlements and enhanced medical care,” he asserted. He committed to providing further investments in soldiers’ accommodations and educational opportunities for their children, ensuring access to quality schooling through Army command and children’s schools.
General Shaibu’s visit to Maiduguri included a tour of the 7 Division Medical Specialists Hospital, where he met with injured personnel to offer support. He also paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, inspected ongoing projects at the Nigerian Army Aviation/TB2 Armed Drone Hangar, reviewed repaired armoured vehicles, and inaugurated new accommodation facilities for transit soldiers before returning to Abuja.
In a moment of remembrance, General Shaibu led the troops in honoring the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, on the anniversary of his passing. During a Juma’at service held in his memory, he described General Lagbaja as a courageous leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s security framework remain deeply valued. Commemorative activities, including church services and prayers, have been organized to pay tribute to him and all personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
General Shaibu extended his condolences to General Lagbaja’s family, urging them to find solace in the legacy of bravery and service he left behind. He reiterated that the late Army Chief’s leadership continues to inspire the entire Nigerian Army. Additionally, he called on citizens to support the Armed Forces through prayers and a commitment to national unity, reinforcing that the military remains dedicated to securing the country and preserving its territorial integrity.
