Alexandra Jones Opens Up About Missing David Bowie’s Final Moments
Alexandra “Lexi” Jones, daughter of the late music icon David Bowie, has shared a deeply personal account of her experience with the troubled teen industry, revealing that it prevented her from being with her father during his final moments in 2016. In a candid video posted on Instagram, the 25-year-old discussed her struggles with mental health, substance abuse, and the impact of her treatment on her family dynamics.
Lexi explained that at the age of 14, she was taken from her home to participate in a wilderness therapy program and rehabilitation center due to her escalating issues with depression and substance use. She described how her father’s diagnosis of liver cancer in 2014 compounded her struggles, leading her to seek escape through alcohol. “For me, it wasn’t about fun,” she stated. “I wasn’t experimenting; I was escaping. Escaping from my complicated mind, my complicated family, my complicated school.”
Traumatic Departure and Treatment
In her emotional recollection, Lexi described the moment she learned of her treatment plan. David Bowie read her a letter about the decision, and shortly thereafter, two men arrived at their home to take her away. “I felt stripped of any right to stay in my own life,” she recalled. After a struggle, Lexi was taken against her will in a black SUV.
The therapy program lasted 91 days in a wilderness setting, where she learned survival skills before being transferred to a treatment center in Utah for more than a year. Unfortunately, during this time, she was unable to see her father before he passed away. “I had the luxury of speaking to him two days before, on his birthday,” she reflected. “I told him I loved him and he said it back, and we both knew.” Lexi expressed her heartbreak upon reading the announcement of David’s death, which stated he was surrounded by family. “Yeah, the whole family was there. Except for me,” she added.
The Impact of the Troubled Teen Industry
After returning home, Lexi found herself reverting to old habits, leading to another round of treatment. She stated, “The mental and emotional manipulation I experienced is something I will not forget. I won’t pretend it didn’t happen because that is abuse too.” Her comments highlight ongoing concerns about the troubled teen industry, which consists of various programs aimed at helping struggling youths.
The facilities, often underregulated, have faced increasing scrutiny in recent years. Lexi’s experiences echo those of others, including Paris Hilton, who has spoken out about her own traumatic experiences in similar youth programs during the 1990s. Hilton detailed severe treatment practices, such as being “force-fed medications” and subjected to “solitary confinement.” She described how these programs, which promised healing, instead restricted her freedom and autonomy.
Lexi’s revelations shed light on the complexities of family dynamics in the face of personal struggles and the long-lasting effects of treatment in the troubled teen industry. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and addressing the needs of young individuals facing mental health challenges.
