Wigan Athletic’s Lowe Seeks to Trim Squad Ahead of New Season

Wigan Athletic’s head coach, Shaun Lowe, has announced plans to reduce his squad size by allowing several players to seek opportunities elsewhere. This comes as the club has confirmed the signing of eight new players this summer, reflecting an active transfer market strategy.
Lowe emphasized the need to lighten the wage bill and streamline the team for the upcoming season. He identified three players—Dion Rankine, Josh Robinson, and Ronan Darcy—who are available for loan or transfer as they do not align with his tactical plans.
In particular, Rankine has been linked with a potential loan move to Crewe Alexandra, a club competing in League Two. Lowe acknowledged the abilities of these players but noted that they do not fit the style he aims to implement.
“There will be a few now who will be going out,” Lowe stated. “We’ve told Josh Robinson he can go out and play a few games, because we haven’t seen enough of him.”
Robinson, a right-back, and Darcy, who is primarily a No.10, have both only joined Wigan earlier this year from Arsenal and Crawley Town, respectively. Despite their talents, Lowe mentioned that their skill sets do not match the system he intends to adopt this season.
Lowe elaborated, “With Dion, I think he wants to play more as a winger than a wing-back. Josh is more of a right-back, whereas we’re looking for someone who can play wing-back. And Darce is a No.10, which unfortunately I’m not going to be playing with this season.”
He reassured fans and the players that this decision is not a reflection of their commitment or capabilities. “They’re all great lads, but unfortunately don’t fit the style of play we’re trying to bring in here,” he said.
As Wigan prepares for the season, Lowe confirmed that the remaining players are part of his plans unless they express otherwise. He expressed optimism about achieving a competitive squad, provided everyone remains fit, though he acknowledged that injuries could significantly influence the team’s dynamics.
The next few weeks will be critical for Wigan Athletic as they finalize their squad for the upcoming season. With targeted player movements, Lowe aims to create a balanced team capable of competing effectively in their league.
