Trafford Adapts to Backup Role After Donnarumma’s Arrival
James Trafford, the young goalkeeper for Manchester City, has expressed surprise at his current position as the backup to Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma. Trafford returned to the Etihad Stadium in July 2023 after a successful spell at Burnley for a transfer fee of £31 million ($42 million). Initially, he started the first three matches of the season but has been sidelined since Donnarumma’s arrival on transfer deadline day.
In a candid interview, Trafford acknowledged that he “didn’t expect the situation to happen,” referring to his unexpected shift from a starting role to the bench. Since Donnarumma’s signing, Trafford has not featured in any Premier League matches, and he admitted that this is not the scenario he anticipated when he decided to rejoin City.
Adjusting to New Circumstances
Despite the disappointment, Trafford remains focused on his training regimen. “I work very hard every day and then see what happens,” he remarked. He emphasized the importance of giving his best effort regardless of his position in the squad. The 23-year-old goalkeeper reiterated the necessity of perseverance, stating, “It’s just another experience to add to my career.” He has limited his appearances to domestic cup competitions and one Champions League match.
Speculation had circulated that Trafford was promised a starting role upon his return, particularly since he reportedly turned down a move to Newcastle United. He clarified, “No, it wasn’t that, but it [the plan] wasn’t what happened.” Trafford’s pragmatic outlook reflects the unpredictable nature of football, as he noted, “It is what it is. You’ve got to keep grafting every day.”
Impact on International Aspirations
With the World Cup approaching, Trafford’s limited playing time raises concerns about his chances of securing a spot on the England national team. He acknowledged the situation, saying, “I haven’t spoken to them [about] if that’s enough, but I play as well as I can.” The goalkeeper remains determined to make the most of any opportunities that arise, stating, “Whenever I play, I’ll play as well as I can.”
As the season progresses, Trafford’s focus remains on daily improvement and preparation for future matches. “I just know that I’ll take it a day at a time and try and improve,” he concluded. With a competitive spirit and a commitment to hard work, Trafford aims to navigate the challenges of his current role as a backup goalkeeper while keeping his aspirations for international football alive.
