Tim Southee, the former New Zealand fast bowler, is expected to be available only for the first Ashes Test against Australia, which starts on November 21, 2024. Currently serving as England’s fast bowling consultant, Southee’s role is complicated by his commitment to the ILT20 league, which begins on December 2. This scheduling change aims to avoid a conflict with the upcoming T20 World Cup in February.

Since retiring from international cricket at the end of 2024, having taken 391 wickets in 107 Tests, Southee has taken on a coaching role with England. He expressed uncertainty about his participation in the Ashes while acknowledging that discussions are ongoing. “We’re still working through that at the moment,” he stated regarding his availability for the series.

Southee will likely assist in preparing England’s fast bowlers in Perth before departing for the United Arab Emirates. His insights into the series reflect his competitive spirit, particularly as he dismissed the notion that Australia is fielding a weak team. He remarked, “I don’t think there’s ever a bad Australian cricket team,” highlighting the quality of both sides.

England’s Squad and Upcoming Matches

As Southee prepares for his role, England has announced their squad for a T20 series against New Zealand beginning with the first match in Christchurch on March 15, 2024. Harry Brook returns as captain after being rested during last month’s T20 series against Ireland. The team also includes Jordan Cox, who is set to bat at number seven, alongside seamers Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, and Luke Wood.

Southee will face his home country for the first time in this capacity. He expressed enthusiasm for working with Brendon McCullum, his former captain with the Black Caps, who now leads the England team. “It will be strange but I’m looking forward to it,” Southee noted, reflecting on the unique nature of his current role.

While Southee’s involvement with England for the Ashes remains limited, his contributions to the team’s preparation reflect a commitment to fostering talent and enhancing performance on the international stage. The anticipation surrounding the Ashes series is palpable, with Southee and the team looking to deliver an exciting contest for cricket fans worldwide.
