Terry Yorath Passes Away, Leaving Legacy of Pride for Gabby Logan
Former footballer Terry Yorath has passed away at the age of 75 following a brief illness. He was widely known for his 19-year career in football, particularly during his nine years at Leeds United. Yorath’s legacy extends beyond the pitch, as he was a staunch supporter of his daughter, Gabby Logan, throughout her successful broadcasting career.
Family Emergency Interrupts BBC Broadcast
Logan, 52, had to leave the set of the BBC’s Match of the Day on the evening of March 15, 2023, due to a family emergency. Mark Chapman stepped in to host the remainder of the show after completing his radio coverage of the Premier League action. He addressed the viewers, stating, “Sadly Gabby has got a family emergency which she’s had to rush off and deal with.” The sudden change highlighted the close-knit nature of the family, especially during times of distress.
Yorath was known for his unwavering pride in Logan’s accomplishments, often expressing admiration for her transition from gymnastics to a prominent role in sports broadcasting. During the 2012 London Olympics, he frequently engaged with her about the daily shows, stating how proud he was of her achievements.
A Father’s Journey Through Grief
In a poignant 2014 interview with The People, Logan reflected on her father’s battle with depression following the tragic death of her brother, Daniel Yorath. Daniel passed away at the age of 15 from an undiagnosed heart condition while playing football in their garden. Logan described how her father had undergone a remarkable transformation in the years following this devastating event.
“Dad is being more positive about everything. He just seems happier generally with life,” Logan shared, emphasizing her father’s newfound joy in life.
Yorath’s recovery from grief was evident in his active involvement with Logan’s children, often stepping in to help when she was working. His dedication to family extended to his other children, Louise and Jordan, as well as his grandchildren, including Reuben, Lois, Mila, Phoenix, and Paloma.
Following the announcement of Yorath’s death, a statement from his children reflected their deep sense of loss: “To most he was a revered footballing hero, but to us he was Dad; a quiet, kind and gentle man. Our hearts are broken but we take comfort knowing that he will be reunited with our brother, Daniel.”
Terry Yorath leaves behind a legacy not only as an athlete but as a devoted father whose support profoundly impacted his children’s lives. His memory will live on through their continued achievements and the love they shared as a family.
