Students Join Spectacle at Twickenham for England vs. Argentina Match

Pupils and teachers from Spalding Grammar School and Spalding High School participated in a special event at Twickenham Stadium on March 17, 2024. In front of a crowd of 80,000 rugby fans, 29 students and four staff members engaged in a flag-waving ceremony as England faced Argentina in a thrilling match. This experience allowed the students to be part of the spectacle, rather than just spectators.

Chris Crane, the director of rugby at Spalding Grammar School, highlighted the meticulous planning involved in the event. “You don’t realize how much there is to learn and do when just unfolding and folding a giant banner away,” he told LincsOnline. He emphasized that what appears easy on television requires precise coordination to ensure a professional presentation.

The students were invited to participate after collaborating with Rupert Gibson, the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) school games organiser, to promote rugby in South Holland. Their involvement included Year 12 students taking part in referee and coach training sessions, enhancing their understanding of the sport, and supporting local competitions at Spalding Rugby Club.

Leaving Spalding at 07:30 to arrive at Twickenham by 11:20, the group first gathered for off-pitch rehearsals and later moved onto the empty pitch for on-field practice. After some free time to explore the stadium and watch the teams arrive, they prepared to execute their performance. Crane reflected on the exhilarating experience, stating, “Being right there on the pitch… made us feel both honoured and exhilarated. We weren’t just spectators – we were part of the spectacle. It’s a day we’ll remember for a long time.”

The students, comprising 16 girls and 13 boys, were treated to England’s narrow 27-23 victory, marking the first professional match for many of them. Interestingly, most had not engaged with rugby prior to participating in a touch rugby tournament, known as T1. Crane noted that this competition was designed to be inclusive, allowing students of all abilities to take part, which encouraged many non-rugby players to join.

One of the students, Dexter Johnson, captain of the Year 11 rugby team at Spalding Grammar, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. He stated, “We would like to thank Mr. Crane for this amazing opportunity and to Mr. Evans, Miss Magnus, and Mr. Wright for supporting the trip. We would also like to thank School Games – Lincolnshire South East and England Rugby for giving us this great opportunity.”

The collaboration between the schools and the RFU exemplifies the commitment to promoting rugby and fostering young talent in the sport. As the students looked back on their experience, the excitement of being part of a major sporting event at Twickenham will undoubtedly inspire future interest in rugby among the youth in their community.
