Steelers’ Rodgers Reflects on Future Amid Critical Week 18 Showdown
PITTSBURGH – As the Pittsburgh Steelers gear up for a crucial regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens on March 3, 2024, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is keeping his focus squarely on the present. With the stakes high and a playoff berth on the line, Rodgers acknowledged that his future beyond this season remains uncertain. The veteran quarterback, who is on a one-year contract, stated that he has not considered a return to Pittsburgh next season.
“I’m thinking about this week, but obviously I’m 42 years old and I’m on a one-year deal,” Rodgers explained during a press conference. “So you know what the situation is. Whenever the season ends, I’ll be a free agent. That’ll give me a lot of options if I still want to play. I mean, not a lot of options, but there’ll be options, I would think, maybe one or two if I decide I still want to play.”
Rodgers joined the Steelers in June 2023, signing a one-year, $13.65 million contract. He has expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play for one of the NFL’s iconic franchises and has enjoyed his time in Pittsburgh. “I’ve enjoyed this experience, and everybody in Pittsburgh has been fantastic to me on and off the field,” he noted. “It’s been even better than I was hoping.”
Reflecting on his career during an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers indicated that the 2025 season might be his last. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure this is it,” he said in June. “That’s why we just did a one-year deal. The Steelers didn’t need to put any extra years on that or anything, so this was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and peace for the career that I’ve had.”
Despite facing uncertainty, Rodgers remains optimistic about his time in Pittsburgh. He praised head coach Mike Tomlin and expressed gratitude for the connections he has made with teammates. “I never would have met so many guys in the locker room who I now call close friends,” he remarked. “There would be a little hole in my life missing without having this chapter.”
As the Steelers head into a must-win situation against the Ravens, Rodgers’ performance will be critical. He is currently leading the team with 3,028 passing yards, having thrown 23 touchdowns against seven interceptions this season. His completion rate stands at 65.6%. However, his performance has faced scrutiny, particularly after a lackluster outing against the Cleveland Browns in Week 17, where he completed only 53.8% of his passes for 168 yards.
Rodgers noted the challenges of adapting to a new offense. “Anytime you’re in a first-year offense, there’s always some growing pains within the offense,” he stated. “It’s always like you feel if you had another year, what you could do.” Despite these challenges, he emphasized his commitment to maintaining a positive mindset. “I don’t have a lot of stinkers back-to-back over the years,” he said. “Just expect greatness. And when it doesn’t happen, you don’t shift up the plan. You just keep on going and trust the process.”
As he contemplates his next steps, Rodgers mentioned that discussions with his wife will play a role in his decision-making process. He aims for his choice to be driven by a desire to continue playing, rather than by physical limitations. “I hope I can get through this stretch and feel good physically so that’s not in the conversation,” he added.
With the pressure mounting, the Steelers will rely heavily on Rodgers’ experience and leadership as they strive for a playoff spot. The outcome against the Ravens not only impacts the team’s season but also shapes the future for the quarterback, whose legacy in Pittsburgh may hinge on these final moments of the season.
