Steaua Bucharest Eyes £12 Million Europa League Jackpot Against Aberdeen
Steaua Bucharest’s chief, Gica Becali, has expressed unwavering confidence as his team prepares to face Aberdeen in the first leg of their Europa League play-off at Pittodrie Stadium on August 24, 2023. The Romanian side stands to gain a significant financial bonus of approximately £12 million if they secure victory and advance to the group stage of the prestigious tournament.
Becali, known for his controversial statements and past political career, is already envisioning the financial benefits of qualification. He stated, “I know we will get at least £12 million when we qualify.” His remarks highlight a clear intention to outperform domestic rivals such as CFR Cluj and Universitatea Craiova, who will move into the revamped group stage of the Conference League should they fail to advance.
Confidence is palpable within the Steaua camp. Players Dennis Politic and David Miculescu have both weighed in on the match, suggesting that defeating Aberdeen will not pose a significant challenge. Politic remarked, “I think we will be able to enter the Europa League group stages without any problems. It is an accessible path for us.” He acknowledged Aberdeen as a competent side but maintained that they are “very beatable.”
Miculescu also shared his optimism, noting, “If we do our job and do what we’ve worked on in training, we won’t have any problems.” The players’ confidence stems from their recent performances, where they overcame tougher opponents in the previous season.
Becali has singled out Juri Cisotti as a key player who could make a significant impact in the upcoming matches, stating, “He will be the difference.” Despite their high spirits, Steaua Bucharest will be without veteran defender Risto Radunovic, who is sidelined until October due to a groin injury.
The first leg at Pittodrie will set the tone for the return match, scheduled for August 31, 2023, and the outcome will determine which team progresses to the lucrative group stages of the Europa League. Both clubs are keenly aware of the financial stakes involved, making this encounter even more crucial.
The atmosphere in Bucharest is charged with anticipation, and all eyes will be on the players as they take the field, aiming for a place among Europe’s elite. As the countdown to the match begins, Steaua Bucharest is poised to demonstrate their capabilities against Aberdeen, a team they respect but believe they can overcome.
