Son Heung-min Confirms Departure from Tottenham After 10 Years

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has announced his departure from the club, concluding a remarkable ten-year tenure in north London. The 33-year-old South Korean international, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, has made a significant impact, scoring 173 goals in 454 appearances and leading the team to win the Europa League in May, Tottenham’s first trophy in 17 years.
During a press conference in Seoul, where the club is currently on a pre-season tour, Son shared that the decision to leave was “the most difficult one I have made in my career.” Reflecting on his journey, he expressed, “I came to north London as a kid — a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn’t speak English. Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.”
Son’s contract with Tottenham extends until 2026, but speculation about a potential transfer to Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC has intensified. His farewell match could take place as soon as Sunday, when Spurs face Newcastle United in a friendly in Seoul, providing an opportunity for Son to bid farewell to his home fans.
New head coach Thomas Frank, who succeeded Ange Postecoglou in June, praised Son as “a true Spurs legend” and “one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League.” Frank noted, “If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it, here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending.”
Although Tottenham is scheduled to compete against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on August 13, 2023, it is possible that Son may leave the club before that fixture. His departure marks the end of an era for both Tottenham and the Premier League, where he has left an indelible mark.
Son’s journey at Tottenham has not only been defined by his goal-scoring prowess but also by his leadership and dedication to the club. Fans and fellow players alike will undoubtedly remember his contributions and the legacy he leaves behind.
