Rybakina Overcomes Swiatek to Advance to Australian Open Semi-Finals
Elena Rybakina showcased her formidable talent by defeating Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1, to advance to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. This victory halted Swiatek’s quest for her first title at this Grand Slam event and marked Rybakina’s continued resurgence following her triumph at the WTA Finals. The match, held at Melbourne Park, saw Rybakina maintain her impressive form, having yet to drop a set in the tournament.
Despite being the higher seed, Swiatek struggled against Rybakina, who has now achieved eight consecutive victories over top-10 opponents. Rybakina, the fifth seed, dominated with her powerful serve, recording an impressive eleven aces. After a tightly contested first set, her improved first-serve percentage proved crucial in securing her place in the final four.
In her post-match comments, Rybakina expressed satisfaction with her performance: “I’m really happy with the win, and happy that it was in straight sets. I was a bit struggling in the first set with the serve but, overall, happy that I managed to win in two.” She added that her recent successes have boosted her confidence, emphasizing her goal to remain aggressive on the court.
Swiatek’s defeat follows a recent trend of challenges against top competitors, as she has won only one of her last seven encounters with top-10 players. Reflecting on the match, the 24-year-old commented, “I’m not happy with the result. It was a high-intensity match. First set was tight; a few points made the difference. I know what I need to improve.”
Rybakina to Face Pegula in Semi-Finals
Looking ahead, Rybakina will face American Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals. Pegula secured her spot after defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 7-6 (1), maintaining her unbeaten record against the fellow American. This marks Pegula’s first semi-final appearance at the Australian Open, adding to her impressive journey in women’s tennis.
At 31 years old, Pegula has steadily progressed in her career, notably reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2024, where she achieved her first Grand Slam win after several attempts. Her recent victory over defending champion Madison Keys in the fourth round showcased her potential and determination.
Pegula’s ability to rally from a 5-3 deficit in the second set against Anisimova highlights her resilience and tactical prowess. She shared her thoughts after the match, reflecting on her growth as a player and her aspirations for the upcoming challenges.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the semi-finals, where Rybakina and Pegula will vie for a coveted spot in the finals of the Australian Open. With both players in formidable form, fans can expect an exciting showdown.
