Paris Saint-Germain Survives AS Monaco but Faces Uncertain Future
PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain’s title defense in the UEFA Champions League is precariously balanced following a narrow 5-4 aggregate victory over AS Monaco. Under the management of Luis Enrique, the team struggled to find its rhythm, raising concerns about their ability to replicate last season’s success. After overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the first leg, PSG entered the second leg with a 3-2 lead but faced significant challenges against their Ligue 1 rivals.
PSG fell behind when Maghnes Akliouche opened the scoring for Monaco with a goal in the 45th minute. Despite their earlier dominance, the French champions appeared vulnerable until the dismissal of Mamadou Coulibaly for two yellow cards shifted the momentum. Within eight minutes of his exit, PSG turned the match around, with goals from Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, ultimately securing their place in the next round.
Concerns Arise for PSG’s Champions League Aspirations
While PSG advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face either Chelsea or Barcelona, their performance against Monaco highlighted critical issues. The team, once celebrated for its explosive play, now struggles to maintain the same level of intensity. Last season, PSG cruised through the tournament, culminating in a commanding 5-0 victory over Internazionale in the final. In contrast, their current form raises alarms about the possibility of a deep run this year.
Enrique’s squad has exhibited a lack of vibrancy, evident in their performance against Monaco. Notably, PSG has failed to win 15 of their 38 matches across all competitions this season, a stark contrast to last year’s record, where they only failed to win 17 out of 65 games. This decline begs the question of whether the physical and mental fatigue from last season’s demanding schedule is taking its toll.
The pressure to replicate previous success can be overwhelming for any team. Many clubs, including Liverpool, have struggled in the aftermath of significant achievements. PSG’s dominance last season makes it unrealistic to expect them to sustain that same level of excellence indefinitely.
Injury Concerns and Upcoming Challenges
As the season progresses into its crucial phase, PSG faces additional challenges. Injuries to key players, including Ousmane Dembélé and Fabian Ruiz, have hampered the team’s performance. Both players are expected to return within one to two weeks, potentially bolstering the squad ahead of the Round of 16 matches. If Enrique can field most of the players who contributed to last season’s triumph, the team will have a fighting chance. The only notable absence would be goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who transferred to Manchester City after the signing of Lucas Chevalier.
Despite the struggles, PSG remains a formidable contender in the Champions League. The upcoming matches will be critical in determining whether the magic of last season can be rekindled. However, there is a growing sentiment that without a significant turnaround, their journey in this year’s tournament could be cut short. As fans and analysts watch closely, PSG must find a way to regain their winning form if they hope to defend their title successfully.
