Owen Hargreaves Calls for Marcus Rashford to Return to Manchester United
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has expressed his desire for Marcus Rashford to return to the club following the surprising sacking of manager Ruben Amorim. The decision, announced on Monday, comes after a series of disappointing performances and rising tensions within the squad.
Amorim’s dismissal marked a significant moment for Manchester United, as he leaves the club with the lowest win rate of any Red Devils manager in the Premier League era at just 31.9%. Hargreaves commented on the unexpected timing of the announcement, suggesting that recent managerial changes at other clubs, notably Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca, may have influenced the club’s choice.
“I was surprised, and I think everybody was surprised by the decision to sack Amorim,” Hargreaves told TNT Sports. “United weren’t playing exceptionally well, but they were still in a position where finishing in the top four or five was realistic.” He noted that the situation at Chelsea likely had an impact on Manchester United’s decision-making process, indicating that the domino effect of managerial changes could lead to further upheaval in the coming weeks.
Impacts of Amorim’s Departure
The sacking of Amorim, who managed to achieve considerable success at Sporting Lisbon, has left a void at Old Trafford. Hargreaves pointed out that communication issues may have contributed to the coach’s downfall. “At Chelsea, it seems there were a lot of cooks in the kitchen, and when a lot of people have opinions, not all of them can align,” he reflected. “Maybe something similar happened with Ruben and United.”
Despite Amorim’s efforts, which included loaning Rashford to Aston Villa last season, his tenure did not yield the anticipated results. Rashford, who has been performing well at Barcelona, scoring six goals and providing eight assists in 16 appearances, is now at a crossroads regarding his future. Hargreaves hopes the talented forward will return to Manchester United, stating, “I hope that Marcus comes back because he’s a special player.”
Hargreaves emphasized that Rashford should not have been burdened with the weight of expectations, particularly at such a young age. “In our team, he would’ve been the third or fourth guy, so he wouldn’t have to bear all the responsibility,” he explained.
Looking Ahead for Manchester United
In the wake of Amorim’s exit, former United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed as interim manager while the club seeks a permanent replacement. Manchester United’s next match is against Burnley on Wednesday, where Fletcher will be looking to stabilize the team.
As the club plans for the future, potential candidates for the managerial role include Oliver Glasner and Thomas Tuchel, both of whom have garnered attention in the football community. Hargreaves remains optimistic about the squad’s potential, particularly for players like Kobbie Mainoo, who may find new opportunities under a different manager.
The future remains uncertain for Manchester United as they navigate this transition, but Hargreaves’ insights highlight the challenges and possibilities that lie ahead for the club and its players.
