Netherlands Faces Wasp Challenge at EuroHockey Championships

The Netherlands men’s hockey team is striving for a hat-trick at the EuroHockey Championships while contending with an unexpected challenge: a significant wasp presence at Sparkassen Park in Germany. Team management has raised concerns to tournament officials about the increasing number of wasps infiltrating the dugout, which has become a source of distraction during matches.
The situation is complicated by local regulations, as wasps are protected under the Federal Nature Conservation Act in Germany. This legislation imposes fines that range from €5,000 to €50,000 for any unauthorized capture, injury, or death of wasps. Consequently, tournament officials have limited options for addressing the complaints from the Dutch management.
Wasp activity at Sparkassen Park has been notable, with reports indicating that even members of the press have fallen victim to stings. Notably, the editor of The Hockey Paper experienced a sting while working in the press room, highlighting the pervasive issue. The wasps appear to be particularly attracted to the colour orange, further complicating the situation for the Dutch team, whose uniforms prominently feature this hue.
In a separate matter, the Dutch team successfully advocated for changes regarding the colour of bibs worn by press photographers. Initially, the bibs were orange, causing confusion among players during matches. In response to the complaints, tournament officials have now issued non-orange bibs to photographers, ensuring clearer communication on the field and preventing players from mistakenly passing to individuals in the huddle.
As the tournament unfolds, the Netherlands will need to navigate these unique challenges while maintaining focus on their quest for a third consecutive EuroHockey title. The combination of environmental factors and logistics presents an unusual test for the team, which is accustomed to facing opponents on the pitch rather than nature’s distractions.
