Hundreds of members from the NASCAR community gathered at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, on January 5, 2024, to honor former driver Greg Biffle and his family. Tragically, Biffle, along with his wife, Cristina, and their children, Emma, aged 14, and Ryder, aged 5, were among seven individuals who lost their lives in a plane crash last month. The incident occurred shortly after takeoff from Statesville Regional Airport as the plane attempted to return for an emergency landing.

The memorial service served as a poignant tribute to Biffle’s legacy both on and off the racetrack. Among the speakers was Garrett Mitchell, a driver and social media influencer known as “Cleetus McFarland,” who described Biffle as a hero and an inspiration. “We have all been saying, ‘Be like Biff’ since we lost our hero,” Mitchell remarked, emphasizing the importance of seizing opportunities and supporting loved ones. Biffle’s humanitarian efforts, particularly his work as a helicopter pilot providing aid after Hurricane Helene, were highlighted, showcasing the depth of his character.

Biffle, aged 55, was celebrated as one of NASCAR’s top 75 drivers and was a Hall of Fame nominee. His niece, Jordyn Biffle, shared heartfelt memories of the family, describing how they “lived fully, loved deeply, and gave freely.” She noted the impact their lives had on those around them, stating, “What matters isn’t how long we are here but how we use the time we are given.”

During the memorial, attendees were able to view three race cars that Biffle drove throughout his career, which were displayed in the parking lot. Inside the venue, a digital display honored the seven individuals who perished in the crash, surrounded by wreaths on the stage where speakers addressed the crowd. Former drivers Jeff Burton and Phil Parsons also shared their memories of Biffle, contributing to the emotional atmosphere of the gathering.

Dylan Zirkle, who worked alongside Biffle at Roush Racing, spoke of the lasting impact the driver had on his life. “Greg was always a really good guy, and I enjoyed being around him,” Zirkle recalled. “You could always talk to him at any time, and he was just a real person.”

The crash, which occurred just a week before Christmas, left the NASCAR community in mourning. The Cessna C550, carrying the Biffle family and others, erupted in flames upon impact. Investigations revealed that the plane was attempting to return to the airport shortly after takeoff when the accident occurred.

Compounding the tragedy, in the days following the crash, Biffle’s home in Mooresville was burglarized, resulting in the theft of approximately $30,000 in cash, firearms, and personal memorabilia. As the community continued to process the loss, a public tribute was planned, including a burnout by Mitchell near Biffle’s marker at the North Carolina Auto Racing Walk of Fame.

The memorial service not only highlighted Biffle’s achievements on the racetrack but also painted a picture of a devoted family man whose legacy will continue to inspire others. As the NASCAR community remembers Greg Biffle, his spirit of generosity and love will undoubtedly resonate with all who knew him.
