Muhammad Ali’s Grandson Rejects $3 Million Fight with Jake Paul
Nico Ali Walsh, grandson of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, has turned down a lucrative offer to fight YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, despite the potential for a multi-million dollar payday. The young boxer, who has a professional record of 13 wins, 2 losses, and 1 no-contest, was approached with a deal reportedly worth upwards of $3 million (£2.2 million). Walsh, however, prioritized his principles over financial gain, opting to focus on building his boxing career on his own terms.
Nico Ali Walsh’s Boxing Journey
At just 25 years old, Walsh began his professional boxing career in 2021. He secured his first victory against Jordan Weeks by TKO, and quickly built an impressive streak of seven consecutive wins. This successful run lasted from October 23, 2021, to February 3, 2023, before experiencing a setback with a no-contest against Danny Rosenberger, whose positive test for a banned substance led to the result being overturned.
Walsh faced his first defeat in a majority decision against Sona Akale, but rebounded with three victories, including a rematch win against Akale. However, another defeat followed, this time a unanimous decision loss to Juan Carlos Guerra. Most recently, Walsh fought on December 12, 2022, emerging victorious against Jeremiah Sserwadda by unanimous decision.
Reasons Behind the Decision
Despite the allure of fame and financial reward that a fight with Jake Paul could bring, Walsh emphasized the importance of moral integrity. In an interview with Sky Sports, he stated, “Morally, it was an easy choice. I said no before I even heard the numbers.” He reflected on how the potential earnings would have been life-changing, yet questioned the value of selling out for money.
Walsh elaborated, “You’ve got to ask yourself how much does your pride cost? How much are you willing to sell out for?” He underscored that his family name holds significant weight, making him unwilling to associate himself with what he described as “playing in the mud” with Paul.
Jake Paul reacted to Walsh’s decision, claiming that Walsh had admitted to avoiding the fight and labeled him a “fraud.” Walsh responded to these comments by describing Paul’s approach to boxing as a “circus,” stating, “It is a circus. People like the circus… But it’s not something you want to mix with a deadly sport like boxing.”
For Walsh, the sport is serious, and he is committed to maintaining the integrity of boxing as he continues to carve out his own identity in the ring, separate from the shadow of his grandfather’s legendary legacy. As he progresses in his career, Walsh remains focused on building a reputation based on skill and respect rather than spectacle.
